Creative careers don’t always follow a straight line. Progress can look like short-term contracts, freelance work, side roles, and periods of uncertainty in between. That can make it difficult to know what your next step should be, especially when standard career advice doesn’t quite fit.

Creative Careers Aotearoa has been working to help creatives into sustainable employment for 25 years helping them build careers that evolve with the changing creative landscape.

Rather than focusing on quick fixes, our programme helps you take a more strategic approach to your career. It’s about understanding where you fit, how opportunities develop, and how to move forward with intention.

For creatives in Tāmaki Makaurau on Jobseeker Support, our programme offers practical tools, industry insight, and tailored support to help you build confidence and clarity in your next step. To access the programme, talk to your Case Manager about a referral. Read more: https://depot.org.nz/creative-careers/

BETWEEN US is open.

What a way to open. Thank you to everyone who came through and filled the space on Saturday, it was something special to see the exhibition come to life and be shared together.

Ngā mihi nui to our 28 artists, and to co-curators Tracey Coakley and Karlalise Horstmans for bringing together such a thoughtful and expansive exhibition.

A highlight of the afternoon was the Artist Panel Discussion, hosted by Amanda Billing in conversation with Katie Blundell, Jenni Stringleman and Clark Roworth, alongside live music from the DEPOT Sound team that carried through the gallery.

BETWEEN US brings together contemporary figurative artists exploring identity, presence and portraiture. The full catalogue is now available online. https://depot.org.nz/event/figurative-artists-exhibition-between-us/

BETWEEN US Something big is about to land.
Figurative Artists Exhibition opening Saturday 16 May.

Bringing together 28 contemporary artists working in figurative art and portraiture, expanding what a portrait can be. Beyond likeness, these works explore identity, storytelling and the many ways a human presence can be expressed.

There is no single approach here. Some works are intimate, some bold, some playful, some unexpected. Together they show the depth and range of contemporary portraiture.

Threads of connection and isolation run throughout. Reflections on community. Explorations of form and of life itself. Each work carries its own story, inviting a slower and closer way of seeing.

Opening day includes a live Artist Panel at 3pm, hosted by Amanda Billing alongside Clark Roworth, Jenni Stringleman and Katie Blundell. A candid conversation on process, perspective and what sits behind the work.

This is a moment that rethinks portraiture.
