Begun in 1995, John Nixon’s EPW: Silver developed over the following decade and a half as a sustained exploration of the monochrome, materiality and light. In Nixon’s words, ‘silver is opaque and reflective, a non-colour in the sense that we know colours to be’. Inspired by sunlight playing across silver-painted industrial rooftops, these paintings situate Nixon within an orbit of modernist experiment—Constructivism, Minimalism, the ZERO group and Fontana’s Spatialism. From tactile effects on rough hessian to smoother applications on MDF and canvas, their glimmering surfaces might evoke the infinity of the cosmos or the flash of sunlight on snow, while conveying above all the pure force of abstraction.

Sun Shine On is a painting project made this year in Whanganui a tara Wellington. It addresses the act of painting as a meditation on time, colour and light. It celebrates the solitary experience of perceiving sky, light and colour at the start of the day and as the sun goes down below the horizon at the end. The work is informed by study of Western, Eastern and local art practices in particular the role of abstraction as a contemplative means of reflecting on realities and perception.

Te Uru Gallery | Jeena Shin & Jamie Te Heuheh | In Dialogue | 8 August - 1 November 2026

This exhibition presents a dialogue between Aotearoa-based painters Jeena Shin (South Korea) and Jamie Te Heuheu (Ngāti Tūwharetoa). It forms part of a series of dialogue exhibitions at Te Uru, and brings together two distinct artistic practices through a mutual conceptual inquiry.

Moving through time examines Shin and Te Heuheu’s shared exploration of paint as a temporal medium. Each artist follows a distinct process that they make tangible to the viewer. Shin’s works follow a system, one that she repeats, layers and transforms in her paintings and wall-based works. Her compositions emerge through endless configurations, resulting in works that capture the passage of time while resisting simple linearity. The end isn’t predetermined. Instead, Shin activates her system as a creative force operating between time and space. Te Heuheu’s undulating surfaces record the movement of his body across the canvas. He mobilises the possibilities of impasto in broad strokes that retain the texture of his laden brush. Through organic repetition and jazz-inspired titles, a musical type of rhythm emerges.

Christchurch Art Gallery | Te Puna o Waiwhetū has announced the acquisition of a significant large-scale hemisphere painting by Gretchen Albrecht, Sunset After Turner (2025).

The work reflects on J.M.W. Turner’s The Scarlet Sunset (1830), a tiny but celebrated painting that has long been an inspiration for Albrecht.

The painting was unveiled last weekend at the Christchurch Art Gallery Foundation Gala Dinner, where Albrecht shared the story behind the work in conversation with Mary Kisler.
