Matt Arbuckle’s work is grounded in the walks he would take around Pukekawa, Auckland Domain while his child was being treated in the nearby hospital. The photographs and paintings included in I am going in a field index a relationship between care, colour, and pathways that are revealed through repetition. Often working outside, Arbuckle’s paintings layer grass clippings and differently-weighted pigments, so that some colours sink in the solution, creating a hierarchy that conceptually corresponds to the medical test strips that would dictate the outcome of the day during this time.

Such ideas around parenting, time and the environment underpin Wendelien Bakker’s sculptural sundials and spun-straw labyrinth. Pocketfuls of raisins and dried fruit are bronze-cast as talismanic objects that gesture to a loss of control over time, replacing the numbered hours on the sundial. This impulse, to slow time down, is also embedded in the spiralling labyrinth. A labyrinth is a kind of parent-child form, where the way through is nestled inside the walls of the structure, suggesting a nurturing or protective journey through life.

The totemic bird appears in windows, it takes on a disguise in each pane, adapting to its background in order to exist. The bird thrives in almost all elements, the sea, the sky and the earth. It has conquered this matter during its wandering evolution from the Jurassic period to now, as it flies alongside the industrial aircraft, feeds alongside the trawling net, is caught in one million megapixels in the lens of the camera. Ruby Wilkinson explores the sky as a realm of creation, freedom and communication through the ever-changing figure of the bird.

“The glimmering surfaces in these paintings might, if we allow it, bring to mind the infinity of the cosmos (a
connection made explicit by a collage in the exhibition), or the flash of sunlight on snow. The latter evocation takes on particular meaning in light of Nixon’s love of the Alpine landscape. Such associations arise through poetic suggestion while retaining the force of abstraction. As Nixon simply put it, ‘The task is to make dynamic artworks, to challenge and excite the viewer’.”
