We can tailor the koorero in our guided hiikoi to cover a range of curriculum subjects, and when paired with workshops we cover everything from social sciences and history, to arts, PE, sustainabliity and more.

Rangatahi love being in Ihumaatao, here's what some high school students had to say about their recent visit:

"It was really interesting hearing about the history of the land and the context behind the 2019 protests, I thought that was very good and important to hear."

"It was really interesting to see how the effects of the Waikato invasion still have an effect today - we focus mostly on the past so it was cool to have the perspective of the modern day as well."

It was a privilege to welcome the team from CLM Community Sport to Te Ihu o Mataoho as part of their Matariki journey.

Together, we reflected on the themes of Matariki through the stories of Ihumaatao, our connection to whenua, and the responsibilities we hold to our communities and future generations. These experiences create space for meaningful connection, reflection and renewed intention as we look ahead to the year to come.

We have opened up our Matariki Experience for individuals/couples / whaanau groups on Friday 19 July!
(no mimimum group numbers required for this date)

Step onto the whenua of Ihumaatao and be welcomed onto the marae before taking part in a guided hiikoi through one of Aotearoa's most significant cultural landscapes. Hear the stories of the whenua, the people and the stars of Matariki, then gather together over a shared lunch and meaningful reflection.

This is more than a tour. It's an opportunity to:

The Manukau Harbour is never the same twice.

Some days it lies calm beneath a glassy sky. Other days it churns beneath clouds rolling in from the west. Sometimes it sits under Hinepukohurangi, the perfect conditions for Patupaiarehe and Tuurehu to play.

For centuries these waters have sustained communities, carried travellers and connected our people.

Every tour offers a different view, but the stories remain.

We love it when kura return year after year to our living classroom of Ihumaatao.

This week we welcomed back Western Springs College who stopped in on their way to Rangiriri Paa in the Waikato, connecting the histories of our paa and the impacts of Governor George Grey on our peoples.

On 9 July 1863 a proclamation was issued to 'the natives of Maangere, Puukaki, Ihumaatao, Te Kirikiri, Patumahoe, Pokeno, and Tuakau', warning that:

All persons of the native race living in the Manukau district and the Waikato frontier are hereby required immediately to take the oath of allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen, and to give up their arms to an officer appointed by Government for that purpose. Natives who comply with this order will be protected.

Natives refusing to do so are hereby warned forthwith to leave the district aforesaid, and retire to Waikato beyond Mangatawhiri.

In case of their not complying with this order they will be ejected.
