Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, our season of Aeschylus's Agamemnon is cancelled.

Following an emergency surgery last week, our director and dramaturg, Holly, was required to make the difficult decision to cancel the production as she receives ongoing medical care.

Anyone who has purchased tickets will be refunded via Eventbrite in the coming days. We thank everyone for their patience and support.

Take a listen in to our rehearsals for Agamemnon. Holly might be the director, but Zeus certainly made his presence known ⛈️

Getting to rehearse in a site-specific space is a real treat. With a glass roof overhead we can rehearse in any weather, come rain or shine. The Olympians are always watching...

Last night we had our first rehearsal for our 2024 production of Aeschylus' Agamemnon. The theatre and sporting world of the ancient Greek's collided as we read this ancient play below the screening of the modern Olympics (this year hosted in Paris, a city named after the Trojan Prince).

We are so excited to get started with this brilliant bunch!

📣 Calling actors for auditions! 📣

Thank you to the many actors who attended our workshop on Saturday, 27th April, we are so excited by the talent that Auckland has to offer! We are now opening up our auditioning to all for our upcoming production of Aeschylus' Agamemnon. 🛁🪓👑

Auditions are being held on the 11th and 12th of May. Please contact us at [email protected] to schedule your audition. We can't wait to see you there!

Character descriptions are below. 👇

‘He takes what he wants… and he pays for it!”

The first play of Aeschylus’ great Oresteia Trilogy, Agamemnon tells of the return of the King of Argos, Agamemnon from a 10-year bloody and brutal war with Troy. Waiting at home for her husband’s return, Queen Clytemnestra has been planning his murder. Her desire: to avenge their daughter, Iphigenia, who was violently sacrificed by Agamemnon to aid the Greeks’ victory over Troy. If Medea is the worst Mother, Clytemnestra is the worst wife, “but for wronged, silenced, and undervalued daughters, she is something of a hero”.

The play contains content of a potentially upsetting nature including su***de, murder, cruelty, violence, and sexual themes.

Note: Some roles may require combat and/or movement skills. These are ideal but not necessary.

The Chorus: All genders, all ages above 20. Wise, loyal, anguished, resentful.
Made up of the elder male citizens of Argos who were too old to fight in the Trojan war, and Clytemnestra’s household staff and ladies in waiting. The Chorus serve as advisors to Queen Clytemnestra during Agamemnon's absence and provide commentary on the action of the play. The often tell stories of the events leading up to the Trojan war, which foreshadow Agamemnon’s fate. The Chorus are present on the stage throughout the play, and each chorus member is a named character. A music sequence involving Agamemnon’s death will require some movement skills.

The Watchmen: Any gender. 20-30 years. Youthful, degenerate, cunning.
This role will be split between two or three actors (who will double as Chorus roles). They have been assigned by Clytemnestra to watch for the signal of Troy's fall from the roof of the palace. Having been up on the roof for a very long time, they finds means to entertain themselves, drinking and dancing. There is a sense of foreboding upon Agamemnon’s journey home. This character is secretly in cahoots with Clytemnestra’s plans to kill her husband, and despite their name, turns a blind eye to her revenge…

Clytemnestra: Female-identifying, 30-50 years. Beautiful, proud, strong, vengeful.
Queen of Argos, wife of Agamemnon. She is the mortal daughter of Tyndareus, and fraternal twin sister of Helen of Sparta/Troy. Ruling Argos in the absence of her husband who has been at war with Troy. For 10 long years, she has been planning the murder of Agamemnon with ruthless resolve and without remorse, as an act of vengeance against her husband for the brutal sacrifice of their daughter, Iphigenia. Her revenge is tainted by her affair with Aegisthus. If Medea is the worst Mother, Clytemnestra is the worst wife, “but for wronged, silenced, undervalued daughters, she is something of a hero”. Some combat skills are ideal.

The Herald: Any gender. 20-40 years. Patriotic, strong, distressed.
A messenger who is sent ahead of Agamemnon to bring the Chorus and Clytemnestra news of his homecoming. A devoted patriot, he is overjoyed to return home, but vividly recalls of the horrors he experienced during the war.

Cassandra: Female-identifying, 20-30 years. Beautiful, prophetic, anguished, resolute, energetic.
Trojan Princess, daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba. Apollo’s prophetic priestess. She is captured by Agamemnon in Troy and brought to Argos to be his slave and mistress. Granted with the gift of prophecy she is cursed to never be believed. She predicts both Agamemnon’s death and her own at the hands of Clytemnestra, and the vengeance that will befall Clytemnestra by her son, Orestes after the play.

Agamemnon: Male-identifying, 35-50 years. Handsome, arrogant, merciless, brutal.
King of Argos, husband of Clytemnestra. A warrior and Commander of the Greek armies during the siege of Troy. Agamemnon is the older brother of Menelaus, whose wife, Helen (twin sister of Clytemnestra) was stolen by the Trojan prince, Paris, inciting the war. Prior to the play, he sacrifices his and Clytemnestra’s daughter, Iphigenia to favour their victory at Troy. Although the play is named after him, he is not the main character of the plot, and unaware of his fate, he appears on stage briefly, before being brutally killed.

Aegisthus: Male-identifying, 20-40 years. Attractive, arrogant, manipulative.
Agamemnon's cousin, and Clytemnestra's lover. Aegisthus’ father and Agamemnon's father were rivals for the throne. Agamemnon's father killed and cooked two of his rival's children (Aegisthus' brothers) and served them to him for dinner. Since that time, Aegisthus has also plotted his chance for revenge against Agamemnon.

Calls for Workshop – Agamemnon – AUT PhD Creative Practice in Theatre and Performance

TLDR:
What: Agamemnon Workshop
Where: AUT City Campus, WG Studio (full address will be provided on signup)
When: Saturday 27th April, 11am – 5pm (est.)
Who: Actors aged 18 and over.

Come and have some fun, generating some ideas for a production of Agamemnon for a PhD at AUT. Morning tea/Lunch provided. Please fill out the Google Doc below to indicate your interest.
We are seeking actors who would like to be involved in generating some ideas for a theatre production of Aeschylus’ Greek tragedy, Agamemnon. The workshop is a chance to have some fun, meet some fellow theatre creatives, and explore the relevancy of Greek tragedy in these complex times of crisis. The workshop will involve a read-through of the script (with many opportunities for character and chorus roles) followed by dramatic activities to explore the themes and contexts of the play.

This workshop will form the basis for a full-scale, site-specific production of Agamemnon to be staged as part of a PhD at Auckland University of Technology. An audition weekend will follow the workshop should you wish to be a part of the full-scale production.

We are seeking a diverse group of actors of all backgrounds and abilities, young and old, and of any gender identity.

Drinks and snacks will be provided at the workshop. We hope this workshop will be a fun opportunity to be involved in some theatre research, meet some fellow actors, get back into your acting boots or put them on for the first time. Attending our workshop does not guarantee a place within the production, but your attendance will be considered at the auditions.

Auditions will take place on the Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May.

ABOUT CORVUS THEATRE CO.
Corvus Theatre Co is a research-based, site-specific, ensemble theatre company. Established in 2020 by director, dramaturg, and designer Holly Luton, the company was created during her Master of Design research at Auckland University of Technology. Their first production of Sophocles’ Antigone, staged in the unconventional space of the engineering laboratory at AUT, explored the possibilities of staging live theatre during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was performed to sold-out audiences. The production was aptly named the ‘glass box in the glass box’ and became internationally recognised for its innovative design practices and directorial methods at the Performance Design Futures 2022 conference in Cyprus.

In 2023, Corvus Theatre Co, staged its second production of Euripides’ Women of Troy in the grand staircase of the Sir Paul Reeves Building on the city campus to sold-out audiences. The production was a research test-site for Holly’s PhD research, an exploration of theatre in, of, and about times of crisis through the staging of ancient Greek tragedy in site-specific locations.
Agamemnon will be staged as part of Holly’s creative practice PhD at AUT. This production will be staged from 11th-14th December 2024.

Please indicate your expression of interest for Corvus Theatre Co's Agamemnon Workshop below. Should you be unable to attend the workshop, please notify us as soon as possible. We will be emailing a copy of the script to participants. Fullfilling our environmental commitments, please bring a copy of...

We're celebrating International Women's Day by taking a look back at the incredible women of our company and the challenging and formidable roles they have played. We also recognize the brilliance of our women who lead the team from behind the scenes.

We're also looking forward to staging one of the most infamous women in all Greek tragedy soon... Clytemnestra. Details to come for our upcoming auditions of Aeschylus' Agamemnon.

"The virus that infects mankind, we have a name for..."

We're doing a throwback! It's three years since we staged our first production of Sophocles' Antigone, translated by Don Taylor in February 2021. This production was staged in the Engineering laboratory at Auckland University of Technology to sold-out audiences. It was presented as part of our founder and director, Holly Luton's Creative Practice Master of Design at Auckland University of Technology.

Using the play of Antigone, the production aimed to explore the possibilities of live performance during the COVID Pandemic. Performed in a 'glass box' with a bubble of 6 actors, doubling as roles and Chorus, the direction and design drew on Sophocles' themes of plague, crisis, rebellion, the rites of the dead, the power of the gods, and hubris to explore what it means to be a good leader during a time of crisis.

The research was internationally recognised at the 2022 Performance Design Futures symposium and 2022 Theatre and Performance Research Association (TaPRA) conference for its innovative practices and methods to stage live theatre during the COVID pandemic in New Zealand.

The final thesis entitled PEEP: Antigone, An Exploration of Performing Live Theatre During a Pandemic, Using Sophocles' Antigone, can be found via our website or through AUT's Open Repository research.
