There was a time when the letterbox held more than bills. When getting something handwritten in the post meant someone had sat down, thought about you, and taken the time.

We grew up with that feeling - pen pals, birthday cards, notes folded into their own envelopes in class. And somewhere between MSN and smartphones, it quietly disappeared.

I think we miss it more than we realise. And maybe that's why mail clubs have been becoming so popular?

The Ruru is New Zealand's native owl and reminds me of camping as a child. I always used to get so excited when I heard them calling. They're such a special bird.
