There’s something really special about being able to do what I love for family.

When Mum was still living independently, Aunty Jen supported her so much. With us living so far away, she took on so much of the load and was there for Mum in ways I will always be grateful for.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s has changed so much for our family. Watching Mum slowly lose parts of herself, her independence and her memories has been heartbreaking. Through all of that, I’ll never forget the support my Aunty Jen showed for her and helped carry the weight when we couldn’t physically be there.

So being able to do this for my Aunty Jen was my little way of physically saying thank you. For loving Mum, for being there for her, and for everything yo did.

I’m so honoured I got to give something back to you, Aunty Jen. ❤️

The second session is where lip blush gets personal.

Something that isn’t talked about enough is that lips don’t heal evenly.

Sun damage, natural pigmentation and different areas of the lip can all affect how colour is retained.

For Amy, we focused more on the inner areas of the lips at her second session, but naturally, her pigmentation is much lighter in these areas.

So rather than adding more colour everywhere, I focused on where her lips actually needed it.

This is why the second session matters.

It’s not simply “more colour”.
It’s refinement based on how your lips have healed.

P.O.V. on microblading.

I’ll be honest, I used to be one of those people who thought, “Microblading is terrible. It’s outdated. Why would anyone still do that?”

And then I learnt more.

I don’t even work in this technique, so really who am I to judge without understanding a technique, but what I’ve learnt in my time in permanent make-up is that almost every service can be performed terribly when it’s in the wrong hands.

I actually love good microblading. There are incredible artists performing this technique, and the few I know here in NZ are unbelievably skilled at what they do.

Like everything in this industry, tools, techniques and education evolve. But what we see most often on social media tends to be the worst-case scenarios. The work that has gone wrong. The work that has been overworked. The healed results that make people question the technique itself.

And I was guilty of doing exactly that. I judged the technique based on the bad work I was seeing.

I’m not here to put down microblading or any artist. I’m actually saying the opposite.

Do your research. Look at healed work. Ask questions. Understand the technique being recommended and make sure the artist performing it has the knowledge, experience and skill to execute it properly.

Because the technique isn’t always the problem. Sometimes it’s simply the hands holding the tool.

And when it comes to permanent makeup, that distinction matters.

This may not be Instagram-worthy yet. But this is reality.

And yes, I can see everything you can see.

I can see the residual pigment. I can see the yellow. I can see the redness from tattooing and sensitive skin.

I also know this is one session into a process.

This client didn’t come to me with a blank canvas. She came to me with previous cosmetic tattoo, previous laser removal and skin that had already been through a process.

So no, this isn’t the pretty, perfectly healed “after” that normally makes it onto Instagram. Not yet, anyway.

There are stages of corrective work that aren’t particularly pretty. There are decisions to make along the way. And sometimes you have to work with what is actually there rather than pretending the previous tattoo doesn’t exist.

I could have waited until everything was healed and only shown you the polished result. But that’s not reality.

This is.

So if you’re looking at this thinking “but there’s still yellow”…Yep. I know.

Just wait.

Because this isn’t the final piece.

It’s the process.
