Here's what I had to say after reading so many comments from crafters and artists feeling it is impossible to charge for our real time and skills that go into our work...
"It requires a mindshift, a collective effort to value our own time, skills and creativity.
If we keep lowering the bar and our prices so that we cant possibly survive, we are devaluing ourselves and the craft.
We train people how to treat us. If we don't ask for more, we will not get it.
This isn't about greed, its about self respect and self worth and applies to every aspect of our life, not just our crafts.
Our time, energy and creativity is valuable. If we want others to recognise it, we must first recognise this for ourselves.
This comes from someone who still very much struggles with the concept and still gives their artwork and crafts away instead of selling them. But I'm trying, one courageous step at a time to not feel shame or embarassment for setting a price for my work.
While at this stage I'd still be lucky to get $1/hr for my time, I believe that by presenting customers with a range of crafts for purchase (some quick and cheaper, some slow and more pricey), they may have a better understanding of the work involved, and can still choose something that fits their budget.
We have to recognise ourselves as crafters and artists, and our work as handmade with care, thought and unique qualities that make them unmatched and incomparable to factory items.
We have to realise that these are works of art, and once we acknowledge the value of our own work, we will attract customers who also value the special handcrafted items we offer, customers who will gladly purchase and love these pieces not just because of their function, but because of the dedicated passion woven into it.
Heres another example. An old car I saw for sale on Pawn Stars that would be valued at $10k, haf an asking price of $900k. Why? Because it was in the movie Rain Man.
The value is not the car, its what the car means, its the story of the car that gives it value.
This is how we need to start recognising the value of our own crafts. Every single piece we make was given our undivided attention at some point. It has a story. It has love and energy and care invested in it. Once we see the value of the story, how our crafts came to be, others will too." 🥰
