Elizabeth Steiner’s pukapuka MOERAKI BOULDERS: The Legend of the Moeraki Boulders appears in a pop-up display of her books opening on Sunday in the AM Room (dates/times below). Visitors can explore material ranging from her completed pukapuka, to prototypes and works-in-progress such as this copy of Moeraki Boulders. ◼️ Elizabeth designed and constructed MOERAKI BOULDERS for the 1994 Australian/NZ artists’ books exhibition THE RIVER STYX which had a theme of exploring the passage from one state to another. ◼️ She chose Moeraki Boulders because in Māori legend they are the remnants of the shipwrecked vessel the Arai-te-uru, one of the largest waka that sailed from Hawaiki to Aotearoa - the calabashes, eel baskets and kūmara washed ashore and gradually formed the boulders which stand up to two metres high. ◼️ Elizabeth scaled them down to the size of a hand-held stone so that the book sat comfortably in the hand. Each circular page turns on a non-adhesive binding. The words are hand-written and the papers handmade, as was the cloth and paper-covered clamshell box in which she housed this treasure. ◼️ DATES: The Elizabeth Steiner pop-up is on: Sunday 18 February (11.30 am - 4.00 pm); Monday 19th (afternoon); and Tuesday (morning). Level 1, Takapuna Library. ◼️ This pop-up is presented by as part of their ātaahua MISCELLANY: From Around The Motu exhibition of award-winning Aotearoa binding and printing crafts (in the AM Room until 3 March). ◼️

These beautiful text/art collaborations have generated fresh ways to create books, and to experience reading them.

Posted • I had THE MOST wonderful morning!
It was my absolute pleasure today, to assist research-librarian-extraordinaire Leanne Radojkovich, at the Angela Morton Room, Takapuna Library, to begin installing a truly magical exhibition "Stargazer" due to open on Friday.
Here's a sneaky peak of the install thus far!
The "Stargazer" exhibition includes two artists' books inspired by Keri Hulme, a New Zealand novelist, poet and short story writer - the first New Zealander to win the Booker Prize with her novel The Bone People, in 1985.
Keri Hulme’s poetry inspired the exquisite handmade books The Visionary and The Silences Between (Moeraki Conversations). A community of artists and artisans produced these ātaahua responses to Hulme’s poetry including Beth Serjeant, and Claire van Vliet from Janus Press . This exhibition shares photographs, correspondence, articles and stories about how these pukapuka came into being with some very special and fascinating artefacts on loan from Beth.
"Stargazer"
Where: The Angela Morton Room Te Pātaka Toi Art Library
Level 1, Takapuna Library
When: 10 February – 12 April 2023.
ALL WELCOME: Beth Serjeant will be on-site on Saturday March 25th, 2 - 4pm to discuss the pieces in the exhibition and how they came into being.

"Aunt Sallie's Lament"

Woven and Interlocking Book Structures

(See today's posts x2 for more pics and info.
We've been dying to share this with you! These pics reveal the visual treat of turning the pages of this intriguing structure that we are so very lucky to have in our* private collection.
Aunt Sallie's Lament is a monologue poem by Margaret Kaufman that inspired the creation of this book. It is of a spinster quilter telling the story of her life. The structure of the poem, coming full circle, posed a challenge for how to construct this book to reflect this symmetry. Heidi Kyle and Claire Van Vliet worked together to solve this puzzle which in the end was solved with a surprisingly simple structure yet it unfolds in what appears to be a complex visual pattern. "The leaves also needed to be cut so that all the preceding "mutterances" were visible... In the end it all forms a diamond quilt square." So clever and deliciously beautiful!
In the Acknowledgements, is thanked for bringing everyone together at the First New Zealand Book Symposium in 1993, held at AIT in Auckland. The book is dedicated to , "inspired and generous teacher".
Which reminds me that we are all so honoured to be standing on the shoulder of such giants!
"Aunt Sallie's Lament" is featured in “Woven and Interlocking Book Structures” written by Claire Van Vliet & Elizabeth Steiner (2002) which contains an astounding range of book structures all with detailed instructions. Available to view in the .room by appointment.

We had a fantastic visit down to Hamilton to see Ann Bell's retrospective exhibition "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" at David Llyod Gallery. Giant Thanks to for letting us make an appointment and calling Ann so we got a phone tour with her. Thanks to you both as our trip to see Ann's works and feature on this account turned into a book art adventure. (Look for Marions post coming up).
The works were tactile and included works with paper, fiber and metal. While we spoke to her on the phone she said my "fingers have always been busy". This really sums up the amount and breadth of her work. Her most recent work was finished a few weeks before the show went up so those fingers are still busy creating!

Posted • .room Makyla Curtis’s handmade poetry collection APERTURES features in her exhibition in the Angela Morton Room which runs until 25 March. The exhibition showcases her botanical printmaking and fabric books - silk, cotton - with the story of where her ancestors arrived in Aotearoa told via prints of ferns and driftwood slivers. She collected these, along with stones, from her travels around the country exploring places her family lived and worked and are laid to rest incl beaches, farms, cemeteries. ◼️ Curtis’s poems focus on different ways of looking at family stories via archival research, experiential geography, and print; and examine the search to find family and belonging: “I’ll spend my life picking through the weaving of our history as it ties me in.” ◼️ This beautiful collection is printed using risography, in a limited ed of 40, and the cover was designed by Richard Kearney. ◼️ “… like layers and layers of thin muslin, each marked with a moment, overlaid and overlaid, like the princess and the pea, something that happened at one time permeates through all of time.” 🖤
