Luminata Voices Women's Chamber Choir is a new high-calibre women's choir based in Auckland. Through the avenue of beautiful choral music, we want to create an opportunity for the light of women to shine bright, and to share our talents with the world. Winners of a Gold Award at the World Choir Games 2024 Champions Competition in the Women’s Chamber Choir category. We aim to perform women’s choral

repertoire to a high standard, to commission new works for women’s choir, to make recordings of women’s choir repertoire, to become one of New Zealand’s leading women’s choirs, and, eventually, to tour overseas. With a project lasting around 10 or so weeks, singers can choose which projects they are involved in. We believe it is important to create this flexible environment for women, so they know that they can be part of excellence and also be everything else they need and want to be. The singers from Luminata Voices are available to perform for private and corporate events, in a wide range of genres and we are flexible in size configuration. We are grateful to our funders, sponsors, supporters and everyone who has helped us so far. Please contact us if you are interested to sponsor or partner with Luminata Voices. It is with great sadness that Luminata Voices acknowledges the passing of our friend and colleague, Robert Wiremu.

Robert was a guiding force of New Zealand’s choral community and a much-loved friend to so many within our choir and the wider singing whānau. His kindness, generosity and love of music enriched every ensemble and every person fortunate enough to work alongside him. A special memory for Luminata Voices is when he stepped in on the day of our ‘Let Her Voice Shine’ concert to play the harp part of Leonie Holmes’ ‘Land Pictures’ on the piano when our harpist came down with covid. What a blessing he was.

We are deeply grateful for the music, friendship, and memories Robert shared with us. His legacy will continue to resonate in our hearts and in the music we make together.

Moe mai rā, Robert. You will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

Thank you to everyone who helped us in making this concert a reality, from helping us with pronunciation and movements to serving tea and handing out the programs. We couldn’t have done this without you!

Just one week to go until Songs of Pasifika! 🌺

Today we are shining the spotlight on our incredible Musical Director, Vanessa Kay.

Full of energy, enthusiasm and passion, Vanessa has been at the heart of the artistic journey, inspiring our singers and sharing her wealth of musical expertise every step of the way.

When she isn't leading Luminata Voices, Vanessa directs several choirs for North Shore Youth Music. She holds a BMus (Hons) in Conducting and Musicology from the University of Auckland, a Postgraduate Diploma of Secondary Teaching from Dunedin College of Education, and in 2020 completed her MMus in Conducting under Dr Karen Grylls (ONZM).

Previously, Vanessa was a music teacher and choral conductor at both Westlake Boys High School and Westlake Girls High School, and she is now Head of Music at Rosmini College.

A passionate advocate for choral music, Vanessa served for six years on the Auckland committee of the New Zealand Choral Federation and has adjudicated at The Kids Sing and the Sing Down Under Festival.

Alongside her many musical commitments, Vanessa is also a devoted mum to three busy children and a supportive wife to her husband, David, an orchestral conductor and musician.

We are so grateful for Vanessa's leadership, musicianship and dedication, and we can't wait to share the results with you at Songs of Pasifika next week!

Arranger Spotlight – Songs of Pasifika 🌺

We're excited to share Claire Scholes's beautiful arrangement of the Samoan lullaby Moe Moe Pepe at Songs of Pasifika on 5 July.

Based in Auckland and originally from Manawatū, Claire is an accomplished composer, arranger, mezzo-soprano, and educator whose work spans orchestral, operatic, choral, and film music. Her compositions have been performed by ensembles and organisations including New Zealand Opera, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington and Auckland Philharmonia.

As an arranger, Claire has collaborated with artists including Hinewehi Mohi, Six60, Adeaze, and Maisey Rika. She is also passionate about nurturing young musicians through her work with Sistema Aotearoa.

Speaking about Moe Moe Pepe, Claire shares:
"I became aware of Moe Moe Pepe through my work as a teacher with Sistema Aotearoa. As the lead tutor and coordinator of our early childhood programme Pūoro Pīrere, we would use the lullaby for the listening section at the end of a session, playing it on violin. For my arrangement I didn’t want it to be sung through straight, but rather to sound as if the song had been blown into the water and scattered and smudged around the edges. I’m very grateful to Vanessa and the singers of Luminata for bringing it to life."

Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa! Happy Samoa Language Week! 🌺

This year's theme, “‘E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu‘u” — “From the high mountains are the blessings of the village” speaks to the strength, wisdom and support that uplift our communities.

For us in Luminata Voices, this message feels especially meaningful as we work hard in preparation for Songs of Pasifika on 5 July 2026. We are grateful for the guidance, culture and connections that continue to inspire us on this musical and cultural journey.

We are thrilled to welcome the Westlake Boys High School Fijian Group as our special guests for Songs of Pasifika on 5 July! 🌺

Directed by Laisa Rasovo, the group includes talented students from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and a range of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Fresh from placing 2nd in the Oceania Division at Polyfest, we can’t wait to see and hear them perform at our concert! 🎶🔥
