The descent to Roncesvalles.

I started this sketch on the steep path down towards the monastery, but it was far too hot — and far too steep — to sit there for long, so I finished it later from a photograph I took on my phone.

The path was incredibly dusty and slippery, dropping sharply through the beech forest. I was carefully picking my way down when I eventually realised that I wasn’t actually supposed to be taking that route at all — there’s now a much gentler road option for pilgrims.

Still, it gave me a rather wonderful view to draw.

And, thankfully, I made it down to Roncesvalles in one piece.

Up before first light this morning and back on the Camino, heading towards Roncesvalles.

Still plenty of uphill, but lots of wonderful places to stop along the way, good conversations with fellow pilgrims, and the unexpected joy of finding a van selling hot chocolate in the middle of nowhere.

There was a lot of climbing today — and quite a descent at the end — so I’m very glad to be safely at the albergue, showered, with plenty of magnesium cream on my tired feet.

Another beautiful, exhausting, and very satisfying day in the Pyrenees.

First day on the Camino.

I was awake from about 2am, so by seven I was up, had breakfast at the pension and started walking. Sad news this morning — the owner’s dog had died overnight. I picked up a small stone to carry with me to the Cruz de Ferro.

Then I started climbing.

I met lots of lovely people along the way and, almost before I realised it, I was at Orisson. I was surprised by how straightforward it felt. Plenty of sweating and uphill walking, of course, but I felt good.

Now I’m sitting here with Basque cake and orange juice, waiting a few hours to check in and wondering what to do with myself.

A gentle beginning, but it feels like the Camino has properly started.
