That's a wrap with Steve Sollberger being the winner this year with a very good haul of 5.995kg. Pictures show Steve lurking in the undergrowth and obviously gobsmacked with his win (for a year) of the immense Titanic Tuber Trophy made of left over broken gardening tools and motorcycle junk. The cash prize probably helped that look of disbelief as well.

Second place was taken by that stalwart of potato growing, Lance Mackie (5.79kg) and 3rd place went to Owen Phillips (5.685kg) all previous placegetters and usually good performers. Thursday nights epic country dig saw early leads established by Jeff Oldham and Trev Carline with around 3kg each. Honourable mentions go to our host Jesse Wight with 5.065kg and a creditable bag from Paul McAuley with 3.325kg. Commiseration's extended to all the also rans like me, languishing in the lower echelons, note to self: Must do better next year.

Many thanks to Jesse for the venue and all contestants for pitching in an helping cook, eat and be merry on the night. Also many thanks to Jody and Annie our drivers on thursday night.

My Spud is flourishing in this glorious spring weather, regular watering and frequents chats are keeping it very happy. Frost protection was required a couple of days ago with fresh snow on the hills getting jack frost out of bed for hopefully, one last fling...
And a reminder to please lock in these dates now: the country dig will be on Thu 22/1/26 and the town spud dig will be on Fri 23/1/26 finishing at Jesse's place in Alexandra. Remember you must be cycling & present for any trophy/cash prize. Grow on....

Discussion on surrogacy was well tempered and humourous. Butch's short and to the point words I'm sure helped everyone understand the need to 'grow your own' which, as it happens, is what Butch does. So all are reminded to do just that with the spuds.
A great day weather-wise for the town dig saw disappointment rule. Competitors egos relying on the rich 5 Samson St soil were sorely wounded as spud after spud yielded little more than .1 of a kilogram. Owner and long time competitor Joe Forsyth is devastated with a potato head that easily matched Winner Doug McKenzies for size, lushness, flowers and height, yet underneath were 6 small, insignificant tubers. The mockery and taunting was borne well and the pain soothed with a visit to Sams Bar enroute to the remaining competitors. Hopes rested on Lance to provide a flourish and topple King Doug, but no, it was not to be, Lance's bag of 2kg was half of what was req'd. Newcomer Jeff Donaldson produced a great 3.29kg result to take a 3rd place weight but, as the rules stand, one must attend the bike ride/presentation to take the prize so this went to first-timer Steve Solberger and his bag of 2.55kg. Welldone to all who tried. There is always next year...Special thanks to Lance for the finish venue, Sam Corson and Ozzie for cookery magic, Eighty for providing the bus and Jody Nutsford for driving on the country dig and Annie for the country dig finish snacks.

Congrats to Owen (our winner) commiserations to Lance (I've got effing toothache AND second place) and congrats to Marty on a cracking 3rd place.
Special mention in despatches for Newby StuG who came a creditable 4 in his first year! Well done.
A big thank you to Lance for once again letting us use his place for the presentation of certificates and the trophy!
The pics show IanB, contender of many years, forgetting the basic premise of 'put it in the ground to grow'. Instead he had a brain fart and put it on a pedestal. Ian will learn from this I'm sure. Also Stu proudly shows his opening gambit, nice.
If anyone has pics of the trophy presentation at Lance's please can you send me a copy...

your spud, if planted, should be well up by now. tend it carefully, add water, earth it up and cover it if Jack Frost is about. Remember our dig date of January 2023. Might also be time to start to get the ol' bike sorted...
