The art discourse titled “Ramananda Joshi: Emergent Ideas on Nepali Art,” organized by the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, was held yesterday, focusing on the modern artworks of Ramananda Joshi shaped by themes such as the artist, king and political system, traditional art and society, art education, globalization, heritage, and the artist’s internal conflicts, and the pursuit of artistic freedom while confronting prevailing conditions and structures. The presentation was delivered by Pranab Man Singh, an art educator and writer. He teaches art history, art theory, and research methods at Kathmandu University’s Department of Art and Design. He currently works at Quixote's Cove as an editor for Safu and Sutra, its publishing imprints. His writings and translations have been published in several books, magazines, and newspapers.
Research and presentation support were provided by Dipmala Maharjan, while the R N Joshi Archive was managed by Chaksh*ta Rana.
Following the presentation, a discussion session was held in which distinguished art scholars shared important insights and responses regarding the relationship between R. N. Joshi’s works and contemporary Nepali art, history, and society. The program offered a significant opportunity to reread and critically reflect on the emerging perspectives of modern Nepali art.

Graphic Design in Nepal's Social and Artistic Landscape.
About the poster: The Third World's Struggles for Liberation Artist: R N Joshi, 1978,
First Asian Graphic Design,Tehran, Iran, 1978
(Souce: R. N Joshi Exhibition Catalog)

Graphic design, a vital form of visual communication, plays a significant role in raising societal awareness about various social causes. During the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, Nepali artists were instrumental in creating impactful graphic designs, including social awareness posters, book covers, and materials for political and social campaigns. The emergence of professional graphic designers in the late 1980s and 1990s marked a shift in the field. One notable example is a poster designed by the late artist R. N. Joshi in the 1978, addressing the Third World struggle for liberation, created for first Asian Design Biennial.

About the poster: The Third World’s Struggles for Liberation

Juncture and Emergence: Nepali modern artist R. N. Joshi (Ramananda Joshi) rose to prominence at a critical historical juncture — the transitional period of post-Rana modernization and the onset of globalization. The royal family’s patronage was instrumental in encouraging new artists and shaping the trajectory of modern Nepali art.
PIC:
On 21 August 1965, Queen Ratna inaugurated R. N. Joshi’s watercolor landscape exhibition at NAFA, Sita Bhawan, Naxal. It was not only the first modern-style watercolor exhibition in Nepal but also the very first exhibition organized by NAFA, establishing watercolor as a respected medium and setting a benchmark for future generations.

If there is a lack of awareness, knowledge, and awakening about the state of the nation, society, and humanity, and if people become too lazy to even attempt to understand that reality and instead neglect it, then the dream of progress and happiness for the society and the nation cannot be realized. This is today’s heartfelt plea.
