VISIT? COLLABS? IDEAS? THOUGHTS? DM!

At Kaalo.101, we aim to create a socially conscious, completely independent creative space that uses art to uplift emerging Nepali artists while engaging with our surrounding physical, social and cultural environment through an accessible, communicative and collaborative exchange. During our journey on the “black train”, we renovated four traditional Newari houses in Pata

n DIY-style into exhibition spaces, residencies, studios and libraries, where we continuously explore intentional and sustainable co-creating and -existence. These spaces are used for a permanent multimedia urban art collection, exhibitions, workshops, mentorships, concerts, reading circles, discussions and experimental artist- and community-led projects. However, we go beyond Kaalo.101’s walls to facilitate art festivals (for example in collaboration with MicroGalleries and POW!WOW!Worldwide), as well as exhibits in abandoned homes and hidden courtyards around Patan. Kaalo.101 is not only a physical space but also a safe and comfortable home for our diverse and transcultural family of versatile artists and activists. We support people with questions and aim to offer a safe environment to present any kind of contemporary art and express criticism by providing solidarity and empowerment. We value the vibe of an accepting and supporting family and don’t try to fit anybody’s ideas about art and society, but explore our own possibilities, values, beliefs and non-hierarchical coexistence. We encourage individuality and empower people to go beyond what they expect is possible — we aren’t just an art space but a living, breathing house that aims to make art accessible by challenging capitalism, hierarchies and ideas such as the colonial white cube: We aim to offer a potential form of expression for anybody without taking elitist art narratives and gatekeeping into account. Our house, the art in it and the connected community try to relate Nepal’s cultures, histories and heritage with contemporary perspectives to share experimental works and thoughts that connect to both contexts. This juxtaposition of our physical and cultural setting with contemporary, critical and progressive approaches, alongside our majorly Nepali (but as well international) community, gives us fertile ground to continually learn, unlearn and relearn from each other and the space around us.

🖤 साथीहरू // UGEM // EXHIBITION FROM MAY 1 TO 31 🖤

“I am an expressive, contemporary artist from Kathmandu, exploring how historically cultures are crafted and constructed in a very sacred and meaningful way. I am an active supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and especially work on male n**e art. Through my work, I have become a storyteller of my very own history with the complexities of romance and intimacy. I’m fond of all sorts of media like charcoal, pastel, acrylic, oil, soap, turpentine and much more.
I believe art is change. It is a revolution towards the shift of norms of society.”

🖤 साथीहरू // SWATI // EXHIBITION FROM MAY 1 TO 31 🖤

“I am a Kathmandu-based artist, and my work explores the relationship between biodiversity, public space and everyday urban life. I like to observe the shared environment of people, animals and birds that inhabit the city through murals, drawings, comics and community-based projects. My work often reflects on pedestrian life, ecological awareness and also noise and memory using visual storytelling to reveal overlooked connections within urban landscapes.”

🖤 साथीहरू // SRIJAN // EXHIBITION FROM MAY 1 TO 31 🖤

“I’ve never seen myself as an artist, as I’ve never had any formal training, nor is it something that consumes my life. During the pandemic, boredom made me paint, which was something I did as a kid to pass the time. Most, if not all, of my work is based on weird dreams I have now and lucid dreams from my early 20’s. The images are more vivid when I’m at high altitude or hallucinating during long runs, and I add that to works I admire from other artists. So, basically, all these paintings are a mixture of copies, inspirations, and originals. Acrylic on wood is my preferred choice.”

🖤 साथीहरू // SOZO // EXHIBITION FROM MAY 1 TO 31 🖤

“I am a multidisciplinary artist working in the realm of tattoos, paintings, murals, and Graffiti. I started tattooing in 2017 and believe in learning every day,  always enjoying painting, sketching, and anything that revolves around the process of creating.
I love to merge different styles and mediums, adding different flavours to life. Bringing my work into a public space in the form of Graffiti and murals is for dedicating it to the people who cannot go into galleries and afford to buy art. Art is for everybody - this thought fuels my passion even further.”

🖤 साथीहरू // SAIKUSH // EXHIBITION FROM MAY 1 TO 31 🖤

“I am an aspiring artist and illustrator based in the old city of Patan. My work intersects contemporary street styles and vast explorations of materiality with socio-political topics. I thrive within a deep and complex process, which often entails connecting with like-minded individuals and entering exciting collaborations. With my work, creatively and socially, I want to spark conversation and inspire change within diverse communities and beyond.”

🖤 साथीहरू // MRIGAJA // EXHIBITION FROM MAY 1 TO 31 🖤

"Hi, I’m Mrigaja. I’m an illustrator and designer based in Patan with over a decade of experience in Illustration, graphic design, and visual storytelling.
For me, art is a way of processing the world. Much of my work is a direct reflection of how I am feeling at the moment and my reactions to what’s happening around me, and a way to voice out my opinions and thoughts. While my personal practice is deeply rooted in emotion, my professional journey has allowed me to collaborate with some incredible organisations and collectives.”
