Despite the setbacks, Tyler eventually returned to outdoor work. Ashley's latest account says he was building a rental cabin at their Goldstream Valley property outside Fairbanks, while continuing their wilderness lifestyle.

Melvin Lardy’s Final Years Revealed: What Happened to the Ax Men Logger?
Melvin “Mel” Lardy was one of the original loggers featured on Ax Men, where he became known as the determined owner of Stump Branch Logging. Raised in a multigenerational logging family, Melvin entered the timber industry young and eventually built his own company.

When Ax Men premiered, Stump Branch became one of the show’s memorable underdog operations. Working with a small crew and older equipment, Melvin relied on experience, determination and hard work to compete with much larger logging outfits. He later returned to the woods with Mike Pihl Logging.

Away from television, Melvin was a devoted husband and father. His later life, however, was marked by serious health problems. According to his family, an autoimmune condition contributed to chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and multiple back surgeries. In 2020, a severe foot infection resulted in hospitalization and the amputation of a toe.

After years of living with disability, Melvin underwent another back surgery in 2022, hoping to regain some mobility and eventually return to the woods. By 2023, he said he was finally beginning to feel better.

Sadly, Melvin died peacefully in his sleep on December 2, 2024, at age 49. His family described his final 13 years as an incredibly difficult journey.

Mike Pihl Logging remembered him as an “exceptional logger,” “loving father,” and “devoted husband.”

For Ax Men fans, Melvin Lardy remains a memorable part of the show's early history—and his legacy extends far beyond television.
