Our show Playback: हिजो, आज, भोली at Studio Theatre, Pingalasthan was a special and powerful experience for us as the Phulbari Theatre team.

The stories we carry are never separate from the times we live in. In Nepal, the presence of the state, politics, and public decisions runs quietly but powerfully through everyday life, shaping the choices available to us, the opportunities we can access, the fears we learn to live with, and the futures we dare to imagine. The sharings we heard during the show reminded us that politics is not distant from personal life; it is often an unseen but constant character within our stories.

We do Playback to be part of a community that listens, shares, reflects, and cares. Playback Theatre is for the community, by the community, with the ensemble simply holding the space for stories to come alive.

We heard stories of rising above fear, finding connection beyond borders, and grieving losses that were both personal and collective. Together, we sat with questions: What has the past taught us? Where are we in the present? Where might we be heading next?

Deep gratitude to the audience who came and trusted us. We are also grateful to Studio Theatre for hosting us this month. See you next month, in a different place!

Yesterday, we gathered at the reading space at the Yellow House for a reading circle. We had an incredible turnout, with people from diverse disciplines, life experiences, and backgrounds coming together.
Jo Salas’ What is “good” playback theatre? served as a starting point for a broader conversation about what each of us considers “good” art. We explored how we navigate the complexities of art that may not align with our own definitions, and the risks and tensions that can arise in those spaces.
It was a meaningful way to begin thinking through these questions. The discussion opened up new perspectives and raised even more questions about power, authority, and censorship leaving us curious to explore further.

We hope to host more of these sessions every month. We are grateful to the amazing team from for hosting us with so much care and generosity.
If you’re interested in joining, stay tuned, and feel free to DM us with suggestions for future readings or similar gatherings. Let’s keep reading!

We’re excited to begin our first public Reading Circle series this month!
Through these gatherings, we hope to explore writings on playback theatre and storytelling by diving into its many layers and deepening our understanding of this beautiful, living art form.
To start, we’ll be reading “What is ‘good’ playback theatre?” by Jo Salas.
This circle is open to everyone, whether you’re a practitioner or simply curious to learn more.
We’ll be meeting this Wednesday at 4:30 PM at The Yellow House, Sanepa. If you’d like to join us, send us a DM and we’ll share the reading with you.
Looking forward to sharing this space together.
Let’s read! ✨

When colours speak, what do they say?
What are the colours of your dreams?
If you could choose a colour that captures the day you decided to walk away from pain, what would it be?
What’s the colour of a new day that promises a new path?

When colours speak, they tell stories shaded by the hues of the lives we’ve lived and the people and places we’ve journeyed through.

Thank you for hosting us. We’re truly thrilled to have performed at your venue.
And thank you to our dear audience for sharing your stories with such tenderness. We’re here to play back your stories, always. ✨
