Mirmire Kalalaya Bhojpur, initiated on July 1, 2025 as the second physical studio of Mirmire Kala Kshetra, was established to root art education and collective creativity within the landscape of Bhojpur. In its initial phase, it functioned as an open and evolving learning ground where children, local residents, and artists came togeth er through shared creative activities, informal learning, and exploration. This phase focused on understanding how a creative space can meaningfully exist within Bhojpur—building relationships through artistic practice, documenting everyday life, and working with local environment and resources.

This initiative is situated within Bhojpur, a historic hill district in eastern Nepal’s koshi province and the traditional homeland of the Kirant Rai people. Shaped by its history, people, culture and nature, this region holds rich traditions of craftsmanship, particularly in metalwork such as khukuri and karuwa making, alongside oral histories, rituals, and community-based cultural expressions passed down through lived experience. At the same time, Bhojpur is undergoing visible transitions shaped by migration, economic shifts, and changing social structures. As it moves through processes of development and perceived progress, there is a coexistence of cultural continuity and structural change, continuously shaping its form. In this ongoing process of becoming, Bhojpur emerges as an evolving ground where creative practices can engage with lived experience, support cultural continuity, and open space for new forms of dialogue and expression.

Within this evolving landscape, the need for documentation and archiving becomes important, along with preserving the voices and narratives of the people. To engage with these changing structures, Mirmire Kalalaya Bhojpur seeks to work collaboratively with artists, collectives, and institutions, focusing on process-driven practices that respond to Bhojpur’s lived context.
Mirmire Kalalaya Bhojpur aims to expand its role as a community-based creative platform by connecting local participants with wider networks of artists, educators, and cultural practitioners. Future directions include facilitating collaborative projects, strengthening intergenerational knowledge exchange, and enabling the production and circulation of locally grounded creative work. Through these efforts, the initiative seeks to contribute to cultural continuity, inclusive participation, and sustained creative engagement within the region.

Mirmire kalalaya Bhojpur is located in Bhojpur, Nepal and was opened on July 1, 2025 as second Physical Studio of Mirmire Kala Kshetra. It was founded to root art education and collective creativity within the rural landscape, reconnecting artistic practice with place, community, and everyday life. Its purpose is to create a local space for learning, making, and exchange, where children, artists, and villagers can meet through shared acts of imagination. It is not a formal school, but a learning ground, a space where the roots of the village, the stories of elders, and the curiosity of young minds shape the way art is practiced and understood.
The studio was also opened as an experiment, to understand how the people of Bhojpur think and feel about such creative space, connect with children through art and play, to maintain a consistent practice of bridging the city and the village through art and storytelling and to allow for personal artistic growth rooted in the resources and landscapes of Bhojpur.

About Mirmire Kala Kshetra,
founded in July 2024 is an art collective where art meets daily life, where artists from diverse backgrounds and working in various mediums come together to observe, create, and express collectively. It was founded to unite artists, document stories, archive the told and untold narratives of Nepal's communities, explore the nation, and connect generations through art.
Guided by its motto "Sabai Ko Sajha Kala Sangathan" and grounded in the shared philosophy "Kala lai Sajha Banaudai", Mirmire Kala Kshetra remains devoted to people and art, capturing the essence of everyday life through and nurturing a collective space where creativity belongs to all. To stay connected with people and build new bonds, Mirmire Kala Kshetra often organizes Art Walks across various places in the Kathmandu Valley. Derived from the idea of a photo walk, an Art Walk is about being present with a place, walking slowly, observing, listening, sketching, writing, photographing, or simply sharing thoughts along the way to notice the small stories of a landscape, people, textures, sounds, and rhythms that often go unnoticed.

About Mirmire Kalalaya,
Founded in March 2025 is the first physical studio of Mirmire Kala Kshetra. Mirmire Kalalaya in Pepsicola is a shared creative space where learning, teaching, and growing together form the core of our practice. It is a place where diverse energies, styles, and voices come together, creating not only art but also meaningful connections. It is filled with drawings made by children, unfinished works of young artists, and quiet exchanges over tea. More than just a studio space, Mirmire Kalalaya stands as a home for a collective artistic vision, a space where friendship, collaboration, and creative thought reside in harmony. The Kalalaya functions as both a learning ground and a living archive. It holds workshops, collective drawing sessions, film screenings, and reflective discussions that bring together different generations of makers.
Its atmosphere is informal like a neighborhood chautari, where learning happens through practice, conversation, and care.
