G*i Jatra (the "Festival of Cows") is a Nepalese festival celebrated primarily by the Newar community to honor family members who died during the past year.
It is celebrated for three main reasons:
Guiding Souls: Families lead cows (or children dressed as cows) through the streets to symbolically help the deceased cross the afterlife's sacred river.
Shared Healing: Started by 17th-century King Pratap Malla to console his grieving queen, the parade reminds families they are not alone in their loss.
