The word fjord comes from Norwegian and can be translated as “a place where one travels.” The Sognefjord, known as the King of the Fjords, is Norway’s longest and deepest fjord and one of the longest and deepest in the world. Norway is home to 1,732 fjords, with the Sognefjord’s many branches each having their own character. The most famous is the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, recognised as one of the world’s outstanding natural heritage sites.

Fjords are deep valleys carved by glaciers over several ice ages, opening out towards the sea. While Nærøyfjord is well known, the Sognefjord’s other branches offer equally spectacular landscapes and remain hidden gems for many travellers.
