Important Notice & Open Call: "Handala Never Dies" International Virtual Cartoon Exhibition 2026

To all our esteemed artists and cartoonists,

Our virtual exhibition, "Handala Never Dies," aims to honor and showcase every free brushstroke that stands for justice and solidarity. To ensure this event is fully inclusive and that every creative contribution is recognized, we want to make sure no artist or artwork has been inadvertently missed.

If you previously submitted your artwork but don't see it displayed, or if you are a cartoonist we haven't managed to reach yet and would love to be part of this exhibition, please get in touch with us right away.

Handala Never Dies'
International Virtual Cartoon Exhibition 2026

39 Years passed since the assassination of Naji Al Ali (born c. 1938 – 29 August 1987).

Cartoons often have the power to uncover deceit and deliver uncomfortable, shocking messages by drawing attention quickly and getting straight to the point.

Over the past 25 years since the early 60s, the late Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali produced over 40,000 drawings and several books of cartoons, raising awareness of the Palestinian plight under Israeli occupation and harshly criticizing Arab regimes and imperialist policies.

Naji al-Ali's most famous character is Handala, a ten-year-old barefoot child, dressed in ragged clothes. The boy, always drawn from behind while watching all the bad that is happening on Earth, has over time become a symbol of resistance, giving voice to the poor and oppressed everywhere.

This year marks the 39th anniversary of the assassination of Handala's creator, Naji al-Ali, as he was murdered outside Alqabas newspaper office in the UK in 1987.

Naji Al-Ali... The most truthful and noble cartoonist history has ever known.

When explicit threats escalated to burn his hands with acid in an attempt to force his critical brush into silence, this resolute response came to document the most arduous milestone in the journey of an artist who refused to trade his ink for personal safety.

The stance was not merely a passing defiance; rather, through it, Naji Al-Ali confronted intimidation and the bans on drawing his scathing lines, encapsulating the very philosophy he lived by and died for following his assassination in London in the summer of 1987.

​It is a story of the will of creative resilience in the face of erasure, and a testament that a free idea committed to the causes of the people endures and persists, even when the means are denied.
