📣For the first time ever at MUNCH, rarely shown paintings by Edvard Munch will soon be on display

👉Commissioned in 1923 for Freia’s women’s canteen, these works reflect Munch’s interest in nature and the relationship between humans and their environment, shaped by the rapid industrialisation of the early 20th century. The exhibition also touches upon themes central to the time, including the cacao trade, workers’ rights, and women’s emancipation.

🧑‍🎨At the time, this was a groundbreaking moment: art created specifically for a women’s space. Now, temporarily relocated from Freia’s headquarters, the works can be experienced up close — alongside a rich selection of sketches, documents, and related pieces.

For the first time, step up close to Munch’s historic decoration for the Freia chocolate factory.

Power and vulnerability, desire and anger – Paula Rego explored it all with a striking mix of humour and gravity.

In this documentary, meet MUNCH curator Kari Brandtzæg, travelling across Europe to bring together works for this major exhibition.

📽️ Go behind the scenes – from Rego’s studio and Cristea Roberts Gallery in London, to Galeria 111 and Casa das Histórias Paula Rego in Lisboa.

These journeys trace the roots of Rego’s practice. Raised in Portugal under dictatorship, her work draws on lived experience and fairy tales – often revealing darker sides of human nature.

A significant loss for the art world – Georg Baselitz (1938–2026) has passed away.

📍 Last year at MUNCH, Feet First brought together 80+ paintings, drawings and sculptures – the most extensive presentation of his work ever shown in Norway, and among his final exhibitions.

Born in 1938, Baselitz grew up in a Europe shattered by war – a sense of ‘destroyed order’ that shaped his practice. His motifs moved between fractured figures, charged symbols and, later, his own ageing.

🧑‍🎨 Since the late 1960s, he turned his subjects upside down, breaking with tradition to foreground painting itself.

For those who experienced it at MUNCH – you felt the weight. Thank you to White Cube for helping make this monumental exhibition possible.
