the Krumple

the Krumple crumple (v): to press, bend or crush out of shape All shows are devised collaboratively, and without anyone taking themselves (too) seriously.

the Krumple seek to create visually arresting theatre without borders, characterised by a strong element of surprise. The human is at the forefront of everything we do, each show walking a fine line between sensitivity and stupidity, as we strive to look through both ends of the telescope for what usually cannot be seen. We often seek to laugh and to make others laugh, and to tell stories in a non linear fashion, with a leaning towards the poetic and the surreal.

Echoes #5 — Traces of performances

SOLA
Calm the monkey mind

“The Human is a cretaure of the present, who ondulates with calm in the Unknown like… fish” With these words, a strange clown-spirit introduces us to a world that is “beyond what our senses can perceive”. With a range of silly movements and curious demonstrations he will tell us the story of Sébatian, a young man who is soon to become a father but who is feeling far from ready. Together they embark on a journey into the human’s mind to find out where the worries are coming from. Can a poetic way of seeing the events of a life change their narrative ?

SOLA is a playful, offbeat and diverse solo performance, which finds its inspiration at the crossroads between philosophical inquiries, ancient spiritual traditions and slapstick comedy. The performance is a co-production with Teater Vestland, Fossekleiva kultursenter og Berger museum and PreForm, supported by Kulturdirektoratet/Kulturrådet and Dramatikkens hus, and had its premiere at Teaterfestivalen i Fjaler on September 9th 2021.

First week of residency at .
The very first steps of a new project.

Opening the space. Listening. Trying things.
Searching for gestures, images, and silences.

Every creation begins like this, in exploration, curiosity, and the fertile uncertainty of not knowing yet.

Happy to begin this journey with the team. and Vincent Vernerie

A week to explore, to test, to get a little lost, and definitely discover something unexpected.

Here we go!

Echoes #4 — Traces of performances

PIGEON SUPERSTITION

Magic, choreography, space and sound installation are the main ingredients in this peculiar performance, which examines fanatically pecking pigeon’s similarities with humans in a digital age.

The audience is guided through a series of experiments inspired by famous professor in behaviour psychology, B.F. Skinner, and his work with pigeons post WWII.

As the audience is presented with the results of Skinner’s experiments, similarities start to appear between the pigeons’ fanatically pecking and the contemporary human’s addiction to new technologies. The pigeon pecks a button and gets food. The human taps his smartphone and receives a notification. But to which extent are we manipulated by the designers of these digital tools, that trigger this behaviour in us? Thanks to Skinner and his pigeons the performance examines the psychological mechanisms behind digital-addiction and asks - how free is the free will?

The rich and very original sound design of the performance is created installatively with 10 different audio outputs, accompanied by 78 autonome output devices. Thus, the whole space constitutes one big instrument for the sound composition of the performance, moving from the stage, above and around the audience, to end up right in the pocket of each individual audience member.

MEGAMEGA

Have you experienced it? The moment when everything you held on to turned to powder and dust, or confetti and fireworks. During a night or a bottle of wine, or just a split second - when your whole life suddenly turns upside down. We all visit that moment again and again.

MEGAMEGA is about people who are in the middle of a crossroad, where the world suddenly opens up, closes or collapses in front of them.

There is always a before and an after. In MEGAMEGA, the Krumple collectively explores these specific moments of total change and confusion with the only tools that we believe can help - imagination and enchantment. In a board game of human scale, full of surprises and magic.

Echoes #1 — Traces of performances

DÉJÀ is inspired by the award-winning graphic novel “Here” by Richard McGuire.
It takes place in a single location, 20 square meters of a living room, but on a massive timeframe - reaching deep into the past (80 006 032 BCE) and projecting into the future (7 billion CE).
Multiple characters from different times coexist and interact in this space, and create an accumulation of cocktail parties, arguing couples, geiger counters, a fire, a flooding, arrivals and farewells.

Through expressive movement, magical illusion, puppetry, and striking imagery, we sought to create a living time-capsule of the current moment, everything that has led up to it, and project where humanity might be going. It questions our significance, or rather - our insignificance, faced with the passing of time.

The project is a co-production with , , and is supported by , Hus, , , Danish Arts Foundation, SPENN, l’Espace Périphérique, L’Akuarium and SPEDIDAM.

The show premiered at in 2019

Goodbye 2025, and thank you for the many precious moments ! From the French premiere of Pigeon Superstition at in February, to the world premiere of Chimera at in May, then touring DÉJÀ in China at in June, presenting Chimera to French audiences at in November, before finishing off with another French tour of YOKAI at in December, celebrating its 10 year anniversary. Combined, all of these particular moments made this a special Krumple year.

We’re looking back with gratitude to our amazing collaborators and audiences for sharing their precious time with us, for the funding bodies putting faith in each project, and for whoever’s following our journey onwards, well, for doing just that. And, not least, we nudge with gratitude to each other, as a collective, for still choosing to create and perform together after now more than a decade as co-artistic directors, theatre family, friends and colleagues. We keep hearing that it’s a rare thing we’ve got going, and we sure agree on that.

New projects are already in motion, slowly taking shape for the years to come.

Now, hello 2026, we are ready for you. 💫

We are proud to share the new teaser of our last work: CHIMERA

In a multidisciplinary blend of physical and visual theatre, new magic and live music, we aim to challenge our perception of the world that surrounds us, and questions humans’ role as the planet’s protagonists to suggest an alternative coexistence.

Just like the signification of the mythical Chimera, which is described as an unrealistic, or unrealizable, wild, foolish or vain dream, the six artists of the Krumple keep trying to hybridise and transform through this performance — be it into stone, tree, bird, earth or cloud — intertwining with various forms of life, in an attempt to rediscover their own. With Chimera they invite us to join them in this hypnotic and playful state, where the boundaries between beings become porous.

Chimera premiered on May 30th 2025, at the Stamsund Teaterfestival in Norway. French premiere at Théâtre Victor Hugo Bagneux on November 14th.

We create in doubt. We rehearse, adjust, start again.
