Fredrik Söderberg
“At the Feet of the Guru (Revisited)”
May 28 - June 27, 2025

Söderberg in his own words about the works on view:

‘… The works in this exhibition were painted during an extended stay in Adyar, outside Chennai in India, where I spent four months at the headquarters of The Theosophical Society together with my wife. Our studio was located in what had once been Madame Blavatsky’s working room. Spirits and ghosts seemed constantly present during our late nights of work.

The new paintings are a kind of distillation of my first exhibition. They are small and compact, rendered in luminous colours. There is a clear kinship with the earlier works: the form we now see is the isolated circle, roughly corresponding in scale to the details in the previous paintings. Fourteen years later, what once emerged from the chimney has now broken free and become a painting in its own right – the spirit travelling freely across the earth and through time and space.

My nocturnal companions during those late hours were not only apparitions. As in London, my work was accompanied by the mind-expanding music of Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra.’

Stein Rønning’s ‘Feininger’ photographic series and ‘dstnc’ sculpture series

Rønning’s exhibition “Script-intern II” is on view through June 27.

More about the various series exhibited:

The exhibition features works from two series of sculptures that date back over three decades. One series has over the years been given the title ‘dstnc’, which points out that they were first made to create a distance in considering them as objects, and at the same time denotes the fact that they have been moved away from this starting point through several iterations which have been generated using both analogue and digital tools. In the latest generation 4.0., manual reading has been used to scan a digitized form. A series of small formats are cast in bronze and some slightly larger ones are cast in plaster and coated with iron oxide in shellac. The second series is titled ‘dbl blnd’ and refers to the fact that these works were made blindly. This exhibition features versions of generation 3.0., which are subtracted enlargements by eye measurement of a triangulated digital form based on photographs of the first generation. One version here is in celadonite in shellac on plaster, and another in bone black on silver gelatin on plaster and kaolin bound in cellulose.

Furthermore, works from four groups of photographic images are shown. Some of the footage used in these works date back twenty years and some are completely new. The groups have associative titles such as ‘Red dust’ which points to Ma Jian’s book from 2003. ‘Albers / Arnolfini’ is a series of green images, the ‘Cranach’ series has a dark ground and ‘Feininger’ consists of gradients. Structurally they originate from the same “image”, where light reflected from juxtaposed pairs of closed boxes is thrown into a darkened box that is punctured, i.e. the camera.

Söderberg’s exhibition “At the Feet of the Guru (Revisited)” is on view through June 27, 2026.

We are pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Fredrik Söderberg, his eighth with the the gallery. He is well known for his intimate and monumental drawings and watercolors on paper, with motifs and references from art history, religion, philosophy and literature, as well as dream-like abstract images that point towards spiritual and existential quests.

Fredrik Söderberg (b. 1972) lives and works in Stockholm. His paintings contain images from a variety of sources that have been woven together in an ornate story. His meticulous working processes can be seen as tools for meditation on the existential queries that infuse his works. Söderberg has exhibited at Magasin III and the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm, and his work is represented in public collections such as Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Magasin III Museum & Foundation for Contemporary Art, Stockholm, Public Art Agency, Sweden and The Nordic Watercolour Museum, Sweden.
