In the book Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert tells us not to wait for inspiration. She tells us to shown up regularly and do the work, with or without inspiration. I’ve recently realized that inspiration (or maybe it’s admiration?) can kill my curiosity and take away my motivation to explore an idea. Meaning, there are times I’ll do less work when I see something exciting made by someone else. Sometimes I don’t actually want to be inspired. 🤦‍♀️

I don’t think it’s a reason to keep my head down and not notice all the exciting work being done. But like everything else these days, it makes me focus on (1) what am I paying attention to, and (2) what am I going to do with that awareness.

Do you struggle with this? I “make” to satisfy a curiosity… but maybe other people “make” for completely different reasons. I’m genuinely excited to hear what you think…

In the meantime, I should stop philosophizing and go make something. 🤣

Spring is here in my part of the world, and I’m worried if I blink, I’m going to miss it. Summers in Norway are pretty great though - and both of these seasons make me think of growing things! 🍃 This is an old picture of my beside the greenhouse at where I have a studio.

I’m excited and honored that this quilt is the feature image at this year. If you’re in the neighborhood (Birmingham, UK) at the end of July, I’ll have a gallery of my work there as well. Please come and see me!

Of all the quilts included in my gallery, this one will be the oldest. I made it several years ago, and even though it predates the rest of the gallery, it fits nicely with my Modular Curves theme. Exploring the cumulative effect of rhythm and curves is at the heart of everything I make. I can’t wait to show it all to you!

The pattern for this is in my book, Quilting with Curves.

I used to think hand quilting was too cumbersome for air travel. It’s growing on me. Preloading some needles and picking a medium (not large) project made it a lot of fun. (Slide 1 &2)

I was in Iowa for a funeral last week. There were so many wonderful moments spent with family, but it was also heart-breaking and profoundly sad.

In the midst of things, I slipped away for two lovely visits with quilty friends. (Slides 3-5).

During the funeral service, the pastor said that to avoid grief is to avoid love. You can’t have one without the other. That line has been on repeat in my head these last few days. It’s become sort of a mantra: don’t grieve less, love more. 💕
