About me... for the curious

I have been privileged to call Norway my home for well over a third of my life, moving from the USA in 2002. The adventure started in a tiny community by the sea, located in Nordland, and since then, has included the Oslo-area, Honnningsvåg and Tromsø.

Each of these unique places has impacted and formed my artwork, my writing, and most importantly, me. As I reflect over my work, the undoubtable influence of 10 years in the North Cape region is apparent.

I am moved by the arctic landscape, intriguing culture and history, and a climate that keeps us on our toes. Magical polar nights, dancing northern lights, the glorious midnight sun, winds that whip and howl, snow that blankets the land for 7 months, and sun that leaves us longing for its presence in the dark winter days: Inspiration in abundance!

An artist´s paradise as a home has resulted in hundreds of pieces - collages, mosaics, watercolors, acrylics and handcrafts, as well as a book, newspaper articles and a blog dedicated to this fascinating region. My gallery, Once Upon a Dream (www.onceuponadream.no), located along the picturesque Honningsvåg Harbor, was the perfect place to share my artwork with tourists and locals, alike.

Environmental art projects have also stemmed from life at 71 degrees North. One of my favorite things to do is go hiking. On our family’s first expedition to a lovely, remote beach, we were shocked by the harsh reality that met our eyes - Heaps of trash washed up on the shore. My oldest daughter, 5 at the time, whispered, “It’s sad here, Mommy.” And I couldn’t have agreed more.

On that day, I began brainstorming ways to use artwork to address the issue of ocean pollution and communicate the importance of environmental awareness. As a result, the One Step at a Time Project was birthed, Treasures from the Sea Handcrafts, and a campaign to collect plastic bottle caps from local shores. One of my current projects, “One Month”, focuses on everyday household waste.

In 2015, an unexpected event exploded into this idyllic world, I was diagnosed with cancer. Due to the nature of my diagnosis, I have been undergoing treatment ever since, and will continue to do so, as long as effective medicine exists. Thus, my recent works reflect the uncharted course of living life with cancer. In 2018, I had the privilege of donating a large collage piece to Vardesenteret UNN Tromsø and toured with “The Uknown” Exhibition during the winter of 2018-2019. Currently, I’m exploring the issues of mental health through watercolors, and a collage series delving into open and closed doors of life.

2020 brings with it a new decade, a new era, and a new atelier. A dream come true, I have a studio by the sea, with a close-up view of waves crashing on a rocky beach and an immense arctic sky before me.
