Stephanie O’Rourke er kunsthistoriker med interesse for kunst fra det attende og nittende århundre, med særlig fokus på ressursutvinning, vitenskapelig kunnskap og medieteknologier.
Hun har bidratt til AVGANG / DEPONI publikasjonen med teksten «Den sublime søppelhaugen», hvor hun skriver om hvordan avgangen fra gruvedrift kan forandre landskapet rundt når de deponiene blir egne topografiske formasjoner.
O’Rourke nevner de spisse toppene ved St. Austell i Cornwall – Cornish Alps – som er dannet av avgangsmasser fra leireutvinning til porselensproduksjon. Hun skriver at kallenavnet på haugene bekrefter hvordan industriavfall har forvandlet det engelske pittoreske landskapet til et sveitsisk sublimt landskap.

Stephanie O’Rourke is an art historian with an interest in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century art, with a particular focus on resource extraction, scientific knowledge, and media technologies.
She has contributed the text “The Sublime Waste Heap” to the WASTE / DEPOSIT publication, in which she writes about how mining tailings can transform the surrounding landscape as deposits become topographical formations in their own right.
O’Rourke refers to the pointed peaks of St Austell in Cornwall—the Cornish Alps—which were formed from the waste produced by clay extraction for porcelain manufacture. She writes that the nickname of these mounds acknowledges how industrial waste has transformed the picturesque English landscape into a Swiss sublime landscape.
“In other words, it recognizes that waste has caused an aesthetic transformation of the environment, as well as a physical one.”
