On 23 March, I will travel to Macau to meet him for a conversation at the University of Macau and to introduce the project to students and faculty there.

ARTHEMIST lighthouse 48 is a 63-minute performance film and an accompanying book, ARTHEMIST lighthouse 48: Why tie your head to a tree when no one is looking? In this fully independent work, Norwegian artist Bjørn Venø inhabits the Arthemist: an outsider traversing liminal, deeply personal spaces. Through visceral emotion, intuition, and symbolic gestures, he fractures the boundaries of structured perception and reaches toward a state of becoming that exists outside imposed ways of being.

Filmed over 15 months on the island where he grew up, the project is bound to the memory of the land and the need for healing and reclamation. Venø authored every facet of the work, embodying it as a performance artist, cinematographer, sound designer, and editor. Across 54 intuitive actions performed over a year, the film distils 48 of them into lived ritual, movement, resistance, and communion with the unknown.

The book holds the wider archive through still images, experimental poetry, and text, and includes a foreword by philosopher Hans-Georg Möller. Each page oscillates between documentation and incantation, image and word, presence and absence. There is no fear of failure, no guardrails leading to success; the work fumbles through darkness into the uncaring embrace of the unknown, where words are eaten by fish.

Together, film and book extend the enquiry of Venø’s first book ARTHEMIST STATEMENT 2.6, translating meditations on struggle, transformation, and the unknown into a practice that challenges commodification and the passive gaze. What remains is a living archive of perception and becoming.

Many other activities for you and old filled the day. The most meaningful STITCH project by was one of the highlights. Great to see the kids doing their very first embroidery stitches.

1. STUDY TRIP
Ytre Kunstfagskole to Venogardkunst

What is the connection between physical and non-physical dimensions in the landscape?

How can mapping be used in artistic practice?

These are some of the issues that the first-year students explored on their spring study trip last week here on Venøya in Stad kommune

With Venø farm as a base, the students investigated the landscape through various forms of mapping and sensory experiences under the guidance of Bjørn Venø - Artist and Javier Rodriguez

It’s been a great pleasure to be able to host an extended classroom opportunity and we are looking forward to experience how the students will be implementing what they have learned and researched in their work.

VGK is very much looking forward to welcoming the first-year students from Ytre Kunstfagskole next week. We are exploring together the possibility of creating an extended classroom.

Javier Rodriguez from Cultural Path developed the V E N Ø - A T L A S for the students to explore and understand the local territory and landscape of Venø Gård Kunst through immersive sensory experiences and mapping exercises, focusing on the interconnection between physical and non-physical dimensions.

Javier and Bjørn Venø - Artist will be guiding the students through a series of activities, exercises, and workshops.

It was such a treat to have on Venø Gård this weekend and the start of an incredibly meaningful dialogue in the support of the artists in the districts.
We visited the studios of and in Selje and in Leikanger.
It gave a wonderful insight of what incredible potential lays here and how we can support artistic practice and dialogue in the rural domain.

Glorious weather, sublime Norwegian landscape, meaningful dialogue, strong human connections…. To be continued….
