Suspended Homes - Day 9

Are you familiar with the Her og Der Survival Guide? This concise guide was created as Marie Skeie had accumulated a wealth of information through the projects at Her og Der. The guide provides a clear and practical overview of how to navigate life as an artist in Norway. It is full of useful information for getting established in the country, and it’s valuable even for locals.

For our last workshop led by Marie Skeie, we explored the Survival Guide in depth. Together we critically examined actual CVs and past applications, fostering an introspective and insightful feedback session.

Although the residency was brief, do stay tune for more posts. After the weekend we have some more appreciation posts before the end of this residency.

Suspended Homes Day 8 - artist talk

To wrap up the past week, we drew on the insights from our workshops to create a collaborative artist talk. Rather than hosting a traditional panel discussion with speakers on stage, we opted to show videos we made during Maru’s workshop and interview one another. The atmosphere was informal, encouraging the audience to actively join the conversation.

Check out the reels to watch Parts 1 and 2 of this inspiring event.

Thank you to everyone who attended the public event. A special thanks to Kunsthuset Kabuso for providing us with the venue, technical support, and a delicious lunch.

Fykse appreciation post!

A big shout-out to the beautiful area we had the chance to explore. We made time for a short hike, as we were lucky with the weather. Cave social moments and abstract pictures added to the experience.

Suspended homes Day 7

During Izabela Żółcińska’s workshop, in collaboration with Marie Skeie, we discussed what it means to live and work as an artist in Norway. Topics included KORO (Public Art Norway) and how her own practice went from only focussing on galleries, to its expansion in artistic research and larger commissions in public space. How she collaborates with other institutions, particularly when one’s research intersects with other fields.

Have you ever considered creating a mind map around your artistic practice? Mapping can serve as a valuable tool to understand your current position within the artistic landscape and to visualise where you aspire to go. Through individual tutorials, Marie and Izabela encouraged us to reflect on and discuss the potential next steps in our artistic journeys.

Izabela was a participant in the Her og Der mentor programme in 2019 and is now an established artist in Norway.

Thank you Izabela for joining us in Fykse!

The best of…

This post is dedicated to the wonderful moments we shared in Fykse, exploring the area and bonding moments.

Establishing oneself in a new place or country is as much about building a community as it is about creating art. Fellow colleagues can share valuable insights and information and over time, we can pass that knowledge on to the next person who needs it.

Having someone else’s perspective brings fresh ideas and guidance, helping us navigate different institutions and opportunities while finding ways to give back to others.

The group dynamic truly shaped our experience over these 10 days.

Thank you all for being incredible!

Suspended homes Day 6 - Follow up with Maru Sanchez

After Maru challenged us to tell our story through film, guiding us through a fast, intensive dive into dramaturgy and storytelling, we took some extra time to edit and process our material. On Wednesday morning, we met with Maru again to present our work-in-progress to the group, exchanging valuable feedback from everyone present.

We’re so grateful to Maru for her invaluable insights!
