Description:
As autumn paints our eyes with shades of yellow and leaves wrap us in a cosy blanket, this September, Asian Movie Night is teaming up with KloosterKino to bring you the special animation short 'Monologue of Dreams'. This program explores the complex and universal themes portrayed through the lens of Asian storytellers. Through this journey, we will delve into symbolic and surreal elements, address the omnipresence of power dynamics, and engage in the discussion about the sense of belongings and self-healing, in collective and captivating ways.

Monologue of Dreams, curated by Minhong YU and Maarten van Gageldonk, features eight diverse works hailing from ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ทSouth Korea, ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณChina, ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ตJapan, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ทIran, and ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒ Armenia, such as โ€˜Sensor Shipโ€™(2021, KR), โ€˜The Song of Flying Leavesโ€™(2023, AM&IR), โ€˜Bird in the Peninsulaโ€™(2022, JP&FR), โ€˜A Dog Under a Bridgeโ€™(2022, CN), โ€˜Itโ€™s A Gray, Gray Worldโ€™(2022, IR), โ€˜Personaโ€™(2022, KR), โ€˜Muiโ€™(2021, CN), โ€˜Iโ€™m Lateโ€™(2021, JP&FR). CINEMASIA PRESENTS: CROSSED THE BLUE ็ฉฟ่ฟ‡้‚ฃ็‰‡ๆตท
Thursday 9 March | 19.30 - 21.00 | OBA Oosterdok - SOLD OUT

Which place can you call home? Where are your roots? How do you integrate into Dutch society while at the same time remaining connected to the country you call home? These are the kind of questions that anyone with a history of migration can relate to. Through a series of shorts, made by five young Chinese artists who currently live and work in the Netherlands, we focus on stating and demonstrating the existing power relations, representing cultural transmutation, and positioning the roots of our belongings. This programme proposes a dialogue between wandering and settlement, fantasy and reality, and the past and the present.

Crossed the Blue is a short film programme curated by YU Minhong Which features works from ZHOU Jinxiao (The Art of Loving Our Selves - (Un)Learn the Intersectional Shame), PENG Zuqiang (Sight Leak), CHEN Hangfeng (An intertwined dream), HE Jing & GUO Qiaochu (Real - Integration), followed by a Q&A with YUE Tao the co-founder from Inbetweeners Dialogue.

We stand simultaneously in the unsettled and the homeland. What are my belongings? How can we find the connectedness? The boundary is between the self and the other. โ€œIf There is Nothing to Hideโ€ reflects on the existing structures of power and questions the notion of identities and roots. It proposes a dialogue between duality and non-duality, the wandering and the settlement, the past to the present.

A screening with 4 short films made by Belle Phromchanya (THOUGH THE MOUNTAINS DIVIDE, AND THE OCEANS ARE WIDE), Isabel Wang Pontoppidan (BECOME THE DRAGON) and Hangfeng Chen (AN INTERTWINED DREAM & TAI BAI YU TOU). Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the world, it became self-isolation time. And, a crucial measure for preventing the spread of the virus is 1.5 metres social distance. Did you take this measure to hide in your home and set the boundaries between yourself and the others? Although everything has been placed under control, there is no limitation to our imagination.
90s consists of 11 videos made during the COVID-19 lockdowns, expressing what these lockdowns meant for them and their identity.

We stand simultaneously in the unsettling and the homeland, trying to start a dialogue between them. Where can we find a connection? How can we make a balance, what are the belongings? The boundary is between the self and the other. Drifting Land reflects on the existing systems of power and questions the notion of identities. It proposes a dialogue between emotions and rationality, duality and non-duality, the wandering and the settlement.

Open Call:
The power of transparency
This is self-isolation time. Despite of being restrained, there is no limitation to our imagination. Close your eyes and let what is opaque become transparent. Transparency is the perfect camouflage. If there is nothing to hide, why do we fear transparency? Can we practice transparency to transfer and filter overwhelming information? The voice of silence is the highest state of bonding. When something becomes transparent, it is liberated. To be stronger, we have to be weaker. How can we become transparent to reflect our emotions in an imbalance of power? .
