Amina of Zazzau (circa 1533–1610) was a legendary 16th-century Hausa who ruled (modern-day Zaria, ) for 34 years. She was a renowned who expanded her to its largest borders, dominated regional trade routes, and built fortified earthen walls—known as "Amina's Walls"—around conquered.
Early Life and to
Birth: Born around 1533 to Nikatau and Bakwa Turunku.
Training: Raised in her grandfather's court, she was trained in political and military matters from a young age.
Ascension: After her brother Karama died in 1576, she assumed the as (Queen), having already established herself as a skilled military leader.
Military Prowess and Expansion
Conquests: Just three months after ascending the throne, she began a 34-year campaign to expand Zazzau's territory. She conquered areas as far as Nupe and Kwarafa.
: She led a disciplined army of 20,000 foot soldiers and 1,000 cavalry, introducing iron armor to her forces.
"Amina's Walls": She fortified the towns she conquered, erecting earthen walls that remained in use until the 20th century.
Economic and Social Impact
: aimed to control regional trade routes, transforming Zazzau into a prosperous center of commerce connecting Sudan with the north and east.
Legacy: She is often described as a "woman as capable as a man in war". She never married, and legends tell of her taking a new husband from the conquered towns each night, who was executed the following morning.
Death: Legends suggest she died during a military campaign near Bida, Nigeria.
