We’re always beyond thrilled to see your incredible glass art - and it’s extra special to us when it’s created with products from PELI!

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Jolanda Pauli (.pauli), a glass artist whose stunning glass paintings burst with color and vibrancy. Jolanda works with Dove enamels, and here’s what she has to say about them:

🖌️ “Dove enamels are fantastic for painting on glass - the colors are brilliant! They can be used with different mediums and mix beautifully, allowing for an expanded color palette.

For layered designs like glass scratching, the right water-based medium makes all the difference! It lets you build up layers, drying each one at 150°C, without disturbing the previous ones. Once all the layers are complete, everything can be fired in the kiln in one go!”

PELI Glass carries the full line of Dove enamels as well as their transparent colors: https://peliglass.eu/product-category/painting/pigments/?pa-producer=dove

Do you love making glass art so much that you’ll do it for free?

“If you really do put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price.”

Every time someone sells glass art cheaply they make it harder for other glass artists to ask a decent price. The perception of value is pushed downwards. The lower price becomes the norm.

Are you lowering your price below your costs just to get the work? Not an effective long-term strategy. You can’t meet your costs – maybe you’ll need to cut corners and deliver shoddy work or you’ll even force yourself out of business. Most of us can think of a studio that’s done this. In any case, your customers will expect the same low unsustainable price for future work.

How can you approach pricing your work?

There are many methods and ways to go about pricing. Basic pricing is comprised of time, materials and profit:

⌛ TIME: a very approximate rule of thumb is that the hourly rate of the worker multiplied by 2 is the cost that could be, and should be, charged to the customer. The idea is to cover all the business costs of the worker including the salary. Also consider counting design time and travel time as working time.

🛠️ MATERIALS: this includes what you must specifically purchase for the project and the equipment/materials in your studio that you have already purchased that are necessary for completing projects. A studio is an investment: consider the cost and use of soldering equipment, glass, packaging, chemicals, glass paints and brushes, kilns, and more.

💸 PROFIT: yes, include it!

Name your price before beginning the work. Make sure you have agreement in writing. Is it possible that extra work will be needed to complete the project? Get agreement beforehand.

And remember - don’t sell yourself short.

The new PELI Glass brochure has been out for a while, but there’s still so much to discover! From our detailed product catalog to profiles of inspiring artists, it’s packed with everything glass enthusiasts love.

🎨 Today, we’re thrilled to highlight another incredible artist featured in the brochure: Hans van der Valk () from Glasatelier Oud Rijswijk. Hans brings history to life by blending traditional techniques with modern artistry.

Here’s a look at his approach to glass art:

✨ On the panels in St. Franciscus church in Steenwijksmoer (Slides 2 & 3): “The church, built in 1933, was stripped of its original windows in the 1960s. Glasatelier Oud Rijswijk is now working on replacing the windows in the spirit of the designs from the 1930s (Art Deco/Amsterdam School). The symmetry creates a calm image. The painting is done with Reusche contour/grisaille and some transparent enamels.”

✨ On the piece “Eggplant” (Slide 4): “I applied light green grisaille over the entire plate and created shadows. This meant that fewer hard lines were needed to build up the image. Then a few times in the kiln for the different tones and colors.”

❓🎨 Is it okay to mix lead-free paints with lead-containing paints?

Usually the lead-free colors are used for the safety of the painter. Adding lead-containing colors to the lead-free colors negates this benefit.

The lead-free flux system may react in an unexpected way with the lead/cadmium bearing fluxes. That said, PELI Glass has successfully mixed lead-free paints with lead-containing paints to achieve specific colors. The manufacturers consider these results to be experimental and not recommended. So test first!
