Urban Africans

Urban Africans Platform for contemporary African art by Rosalie van Deursen. Founder and Art Historian, Art Consult

I have always had a life-long fascination for Africa and have travelled the continent widely. It’s beautiful, but it’s mainly the people who keep me coming back. As an art historian I love to tell real stories about real people and share experiences. However, over the years I have noticed that many people have stereotypical ideas about Africa and contemporary African art. My goal is to confront th

ese stereotypes and create a broader awareness about Africa’s diversity. That’s why I’ve set up Urban Africans where you catch a glimpse of the diversity of everyday city life through the eyes of artists on the African continent. These urban African artists are not afraid to challenge assumptions and conventions and live their lives to the full. On Urban Africans you’ll find articles, curated shows, documentaries, reviews… but don’t waste time reading this! Click on: www.urbanafricans.com

Benieuwd naar jouw (vriendelijke!?) monster! 👹

A Journey into the Unknown…

Off I went last Monday. I got on my bike as a student and headed to the introduction week of the Master 'Crossover Creativity' part of the school of Creative Transformation at the Utrecht School of Arts.

A week full of introductions to each other and to all kinds of inspiring muses working methods, design research, critical reflection but above all, doing and creating a lot! And laugh!
We created, improvised, danced, wrote, played and created all days long.

We looked at the activist within us and learned that:
👉there are no failures but only variations
👉 everything is material
👉 above all you have to have fun
👉 you can use all your senses for research
👉you can use what is already there
👉 slowing down helps
👉humor and playing is important
👉 co-creation happens between us
👉co-ownership is important
👉it's nice to step into your brave space
👉And above all, that you should be open to the discomfort of not knowing what the end outcome is.

I can’t wait for more. The Research Journey has begun. 👀
Thanks to the lecturers and Susan van Esch and all other teachers at the Utrecht School of the Arts for this beautiful, inspiring start. 🤩

ABOUT

I have always had a life-long fascination for Africa and have travelled the continent widely for more than 25 years. It’s beautiful, but it’s always the people who keep me coming back.

I’m magnetically drawn to the new mega-cities and their inhabitants and as an art-historian, especially the contemporary urban artists. These are cutting-edge individuals who dare to be different, to risk their own safety to speak their truth. Knowing them inspires me to live a bigger, bolder, more generous life.

By sharing the stories of these pioneering artists I want to create a greater awareness about contemporary African artists in their vibrant cities. In 2014 I launched URBAN AFRICANS, a platform focused on discovering Africa through the eyes of contemporary artists.

With Urban Africans I share artists’ stories through CURATING exhibitions, WRITING articles, giving LECTURES, making DOCUMENTARIES, ART CONSULTANCY and organizing ART TOURS to artists studios in cities on the African continent & biennials like Dak’Art and Kampala Art Biennial.
