This weekend marks the Uitfeest – the annual opening of the cultural season in our city of residence Utrecht. We will celebrate and participate with three various instances: two taking place in our office and courtyard and one in another historical venue.

Our shared courtyard Abraham Dolehof will be one of the locations during the open air art manifestation Care Full – organized by Art Utrecht in light of Utrecht’s 900 year of city rights. Now recurring collaborators P-K-K-P will host a performance involving cooking and eating during the opening on Saturday 10 September at 15:30. On Sunday 11 September they will host a workshop making clay imprints of the city's textures, that shall feature in their open air installation Leaving Traces, that will be on view from this weekend through 30 October and is open daily from 10:00–18:00.

Simultaneously, Mutual Support Platform (MSP) will take over our office both days from 12:00 onward. MSP is a space for conversations and actions by/between/for alumni (and students and teachers) of the HKU Master Fine Art. Contributors include Cara Farnan, Kaylie Kist, Angelina Kumar, Sinwah Lai (KIU collective), Gizem Üstüner, Alëna Vinokurova (SATA TAAS), Amy Webb, and Jinxiao Zhou.

For additional information on P-K-K-P's work and performance(s), as well as details on our neighbor Ienke Kastelein's Sporen van Ursula / Dwelling in Uncertainty (which continues on her earlier work for our exhibition New Habits in 2014), please visit https://artutrecht.com/carefull/

Next to these events in our headquarters, we will be present alongside many local cultural partner institutes at Rondje Singel, held in Wolvenplein on Sunday from 12:00–18:00. During this informative and open gathering and joint exhibition, the mobile installation of Travelling Farm Museum of Forgotten Skills will be stalled at the location. Today is World AIDS day. Each year since 2017, Casco has partnered with Visual Aids to present their annual commissioned and distributed video program for Day With(out) Art, an international day of action and mourning in response to the ongoing AIDS crisis. During this collaborative annual project organizations worldwide present exhibitions, screenings and public programs to highlight work by HIV+ artists and artworks addressing current issues around AIDS. While this movement has been US-centered, we take part yearly to acknowledge the impact of the virus across international communities. In The Netherlands, for example, these realities resonate through the legacies of q***r of color collective Strange Fruit (1989-2002), through the 2018 International AIDS conference in Amsterdam, and the ongoing holistic support of organizations like ShivA – Spiritualiteit, hiv & Aids.

For Day With(out) Art 2021, we will host ENDURING CARE, a program of seven new videos highlighting strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic. Find the embedded video on our website, as well as the Enduring Care Resource Guide, which includes more information on the event, questions and exercises to collectively discuss the films, and allows you to learn more about the ongoing AIDS pandemic through zines, articles, art and other links.

Exhibition by Ola Hassanain
6 November 2021–20 January 2022 / Casco HQ
Opening on Saturday 6 November 2021, 11:00–18:00
Workable Geographies

Workable Geographies by artist and architect Ola Hassanain is an ongoing artistic research project that focuses on the relationship to land in Khartoum (the capital city of Sudan) and elsewhere. Hassanain visualizes data and conversations through maps and architectural forms in effort to capture the dynamic complexity of the built environment as an extension of human ecology.

Ola Hassanain’s work focuses on how we can summon subjectivities to exist together outside state forces that cause displacement, and which regulate and hold the coding for the reality of lived life. In this project, sensing what we cannot confirm is tangible and a way of perceiving that might allow us to imagine futures that are lived differently. Hassanain proposes that we read across material collected about the ground we stand on, enclosures we inhabit, and specifically, what that could say about urbanity under the political climate in Khartoum.

Exhibition by Mariëlle Videler
6 November 2021–19 December 2021 / TFM Depot, Leidsche Rijn
Opening on Saturday 6 November 2021, 11:00–18:00
365 Plants

Mariëlle Videler works across media, creating installations, drawings, objects, videos and performances. Based on the belief that all organisms have equal value, she creates a pathway through the textures of the world. She explores a new, intensive way of feeling, perceiving and acting, identifying herself as a traveler who makes physical, but above all imaginary journeys.

365 PLANTS is the outcome of a year-long collection of intricate, almost extraterrestrial plants that Videler created not by looking or thinking of a plant, but by using small scissors and black ink to slowly sense the plant.

The presentation of 365 PLANTS in Leidsche Rijn Centrum is hosted at the Travelling Farm Museum depot.

Food Sovereignty in Zapatista territories: an exchange of stories and practices

Part of Gathering for Life by Gira Holanda happening this weekend. We would like to ask if you can donate to support the movement if you have the means: https://www.gofundme.com/f/gira-holanda-fund-raising

During the afternoon at Casco the Zapatista delegation shares their stories, practices and knowledges about how food sovereignty is organised in their territories. We discuss a diversity of related topics, such as seed commodification and access to land, and through this reflect on the organisation of our food systems. With various local initiatives and collectives also represented, we will exchange experiences of struggle and empowerment through food sovereignty.

Before attending read the house rules and COVID-regulations carefully. You can find them via the official event and our website. There you can also find the program, RSVP and access info. This afternoon is facilitated by Casco, the Barricade, Food Autonomy Festival Utrecht and Taste Before You Waste.

The Mother Mountain Institute

The Mother Mountain Institute by Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) is an ongoing artwork and artistic research project that collects testimonies from (birth) mothers who have lost their child to transnational and transracial adoption. Met special guests als Boer Peter, Kwekerij Stekkers, Melktap Harmelen, Four Sisters en Myvillages en met bijdragen van Play the City en Kasvio

Travelling Farm Museum of Forgotten Skills begon haar tour in 2020 langs lokale landbouwinitiatieven in én rond Leidsche Rijn: een ooit uitgestrekt, groen boerenlandschap.

Special guests include Boer Peter, Kwekerij Stekkers, Melktap Harmelen, Four Sisters, Myvillages and many more as well as with contributions by Play the City and Kasvio

Travelling Farm Museum of Forgotten Skills began its tour in 2020 by visiting local agricultural initiatives in and around Utrecht’s Leidsche Rijn, a once vast, green, farmland. Despite the pandemic conditions, every week over late spring and summer, we took grounded tours, meeting and learning with an amazing list of incredibly knowledgeable and generous farmers. Now with the season of autumn returning, we organize a day of gathering to share the harvest of the Travelling Farm Museum and its special guests, to look back together at the labor and movement of the last seasons, and to get to know each other more with food, music, and perhaps dance!

During the Oogstfeest farmers, neighbors, and food experts, including you, are invited to join the first session of the Food Game developed by Play the City. The game outlines a common and sustainable vision of how regional and healthy food could be organized in Utrecht West in the coming years. Your knowledge and experience during this game session is of great importance toward accelerating the transition to a more sustainable food system.

Join us this Saturday 18 September 14:00 – 17:00 CET during the first landmark event after our Summer break. More info and how to apply via: https://casco.art/en/activity/collective-pot-art-of-practicing-the-commons-based-economy-of-resilience/

(bezoek website voor de Nederlandse tekst)

Collective Pot? Art of practicing the commons-based economy of resilience is an online pilot course organized by Casco Art Institute within the framework of C4R (Cultures 4 Resilience). This course features artists, artistic collectives and other practitioners who will offer guidance to use and adapt relevant tools for a resilient economy. Currently we have assembled four tools for close workshops:

Calculating the value of the commons by AAA atelier d’architecture autogérée
https://c4r.info/en/opentools/iceberg

How is an evaluation method of a commons site created to counter the conventional value applied to it by governing bodies and decision makers? AAA builds on the ongoing tradition of the Community Economies framework and its iceberg iconography. By doing so, they offer a tool that can be adapted, re-applied and become an ally to groups, communities and commoners to visibilize what remains conveniently hidden or unaccounted for ‘in the eyes’ of the market and the government when decisions on such commons sites take place.

Art for Universal Basic Income by Institute of Radical Imagination, channeled by Mao Mollona, Marco Baravalle and Emanuele Braga
https://c4r.info/en/opentools/art-for-ubi

How can artists organize against the increasing inequality amplified by the pandemic conditions globally? Art for Universal Basic Income – a campaign initiated by artists – is converging energies with movements across the world challenging the market’s current modes of exploitation.

Rojava Film Commune by Rojava Film Commune, channeled by Sevinaz Evdike
https://c4r.info/en/opentools/rojavafilmcommune

What enables a community to operate with minimal reliance on money? The Rojava Film Commune works for the production, distribution, and reception of films depicting and documenting the stateless society of Rojava, Kurdish and Arab culture, and the region’s continuing military and ideological struggles.

Open Collective.com by Open Collective, channeled by Caroline Woolard
https://c4r.info/en/opentools/opencollective

What shape can the infrastructure for the solidarity economy take? The Open Collective is working to build legal, financial, and technical tools which are open source and transparent – enabling connections between financial institutions, cooperatives, mutual aid groups and non-profit organizations.
