Gaudeamus presents young music pioneers. The eponymous and highly renowned music festival takes place in September, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

GAUDEAMUS AWARD NOMINEE JOURNEYS #3: Tytti Arola

During Gaudeamus Festival 2026, Rogier Boogaard closely followed the 4 nominees for the Gaudeamus Award, going from rehearsal to performance to workshop, getting to know the city, the jury and each other. The result is an intimate 5-part-portrait of an important chapter in the career of these 4 young composers.

Today we focus on the Hongkong based composer Tytti Arola, who worked with lovemusic, Laura C***s Laura C***s and Kalle Hakosalo Kalle Hakosalo during the festival.

Treework is an experimental opera created by the collective Landmark in collaboration with the trees of Landgoed Zonheuvel in Doorn. They create performances based on a principle of radical equality with non-human creators. What does a theatre look like that looks beyond the human, allowing non-human perspectives and influences into every stage of the work?

Treework is the follow-up of Stonework, a duet between a human performer and a stone from the Norwegian mountain region of Hallingskarvet, which premiered at the Gaudeamus Festival in 2022.

For 80 years, Gaudeamus has offered a stage to young makers and experiments in sound and musical performance. A long and fascinating history, but what can we do with it today? For Terrapolis, our concert series for musical performances that redefine the idea of what a musical performance can be, we invite three young producers from the Stranded FM stable to create new work based on material from our archive. The result will be premiered live in the raw cultural haven of De Nijverheid.

The Gaudeamus Award is our yearly incentive prize for young composers. Ever since the first Award in 1957 the Award has been a kickstart for the career of many composers, including Louis Andriessen, Pauline Oliveros, Unsuk Chin and Aart Strootman. Composers/creators of any nationality or background who were born after 12 September 1991 may enter their works.

With Aníbal Vidal Astroza receiving the Gaudeamus Award from jury members Hardi Kurda, Jessie Cox and Peni Candra Rini, followed by a spine tingling performance of Ivan Vukosavljevic‘s ‘a mind in the heart’ by pianist Joana Gama, Gaudeamus Festival 2026 beautifully came to an end yesterday night TivoliVredenburg Cloud Nine.

This concluded a day packed with installations and performances. Collectief Wezen, lovemusic, eartothe_earth and Kalle Hakosalo & Tytti Arola explored differents way of merging performance art, music and - in the latter case - pesto making. Jad Atoui and Nick Dunston & PULSE presented cutting edge electronic experiments, while Hamraaz, Talal Fayad with 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝘀 𝗤𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶 & Skander Jaïbi - اسكندر الجعايبي and Ragazze Quartet & Katharine Dain incorporated traditions, poetry and mythology with brand new perspectives.

Thanks so much for all the audience members, artists, locations, volunteers, funders and everyone else making these five days so colourful, exciting and unforgettable!
