Birds of Paradise is a 5 day festival, annually taking place in Utrecht (TivoliVredenburg) and Antwerp (De Singel) in which indie pop, electronic and contemporary classical music blend. Internationally, a vibrant scene of genre bending composers, singer-songwriters, electronic artists, ‘classical musicians’ emerges. Birds of Paradise provides a platform for these artists who get their inspiration
on the verge of undiscovered artistic territories, genres and disciplines. At Birds of Paradise festival, five renowned multi-disciplinary artists are offered a residency for one day. Each day is dedicated to one particular musical innovator: a Bird of Paradise, so to speak. During their residency, they get a free pass for creating exclusive, tailor-made performances, start new collaborations and curate an extensive context programme: both off and online. Their very own musical skills, unique style and connection to socially urgent topics form the basis of the context programme, which will offer audiences the stories behind the works and many in-depth experiences.
Afgelopen festival kwamen o.a. 90 leerlingen van het Leidsche Rijn College naar TivoliVredenburg om in ons educatieprogramma Music Miners nieuwe manieren van muziek maken te ontdekken. It’s a special tailor-made art piece, that you can visit digitally through our website and in real life at our festival. Today we proudly present you the room of Rufus Wainwright.
Mees, can you take us through the creation of this room?
“To fit with the story depicted in Rufus’ opera ‘Hadrian’, and to fit with the era in which it takes place, I decided to have the room depicted as a bas-relief. The base of this relief is an etching of Hadrian’s Villa by Piranesi, which I’ve ended up using as a stage - with the faux perspective and set dressing being inspired by Palladio’s ‘Teatro Olimpico’.
I thought it’d be interesting to contrast the classical look and feel of a bas-relief and the villa, with modern and technological assets - depicting the parts of the context program connected to this festival day. Which is obviously how the microphones and headphones ended up in this ancient artifact.
The avatar for Rufus is based on several mosaic tiles found in Italica, that depict a variety of birds, with the chosen bird being a peacock. Also, it was a joy to have my favorite flower appear in one of the rooms.”

🏴 The first part of this concert is a shortened version of Hadrian, an opera in 4 acts by Rufus Wainwright and Daniel MacIvor. The work tells the story of the Roman emperor Hadrian and his dramatic love affair with the young man Antinous. According to Wainwright, the story about openly gay love against the backdrop of the political climate has many parallels with ‘how we live today’. Expect an orchestra with 5 soloists, supported with beautiful images by the late Robert Mapplethorpe, the famous American photographer.
In the second half, Wainwright plays orchestrated numbers from his own repertoire, collaborating with the soloists and musicians from the first part.

The American-Canadian pop singer made a name for himself as a singer-songwriter with several successful CDs. His love for classical music and opera is also reflected in his music. During this concert, a shortened version of his opera Hadrian will be performed by the Brussels Philharmonic. In the second half, Wainwright plays orchestrated numbers from his own repertoire. In dit speciale project met Rufus Wainwright en ster bas-bariton Davone Tines is het orkest in goede handen van dirigent Clark Rundell die eerder samenwerkte met Elvis Costello, Wayne Shorter en Esperanza Spalding.

🏴 The Italian SPIME.IM uses technology, 3D art and electronic music to create immersive audio-video experiences. Experiences that explore the limits of our identity, physicality and perception. A world in which our virtual doppelganger takes on an increasingly intense, all-encompassing character. Together with pianist Lubomyr Melnyk and cellist Julia Kent, they’ll bring larger than life projections that will take you on an audiovisual trip.

🇳🇱 Julia Kent is een Canadese celliste. Zij is mede-oprichtster van de gothic cellogroep Rasputina en later bandlid van Antony and the Johnsons. Ze studeerde cello aan de universiteit van Indiana. Haar muziek week ver van het klassieke pad af. Ze was meer singer-songwriter die zich graag bezighield met diverse stijlen van rockmuziek. Sindsdien werkt ze aan een imposante solo carriere en releasde tal van albums met diepe, meeslepende soundscapes, waarbij cello loops vaak een belangrijke rol spelen. Samen met de pianomuziek van Lubomyr Melnyk staat je dus een bijzonder concert te wachten. En dan hebben we nog niet eens over de visuals van SPIME.IM verteld! Daarover morgen meer.
🏴 Julia Kent is a Canadian cellist. She is co-founder of the gothic cello group Rasputina and later a band member of Antony and the Johnsons. She studied cello at Indiana University. Her music deviated far from the classical path and she was more of a singer-songwriter who liked to dabble in various styles of rock music. Since then she has been working on an impressive solo career and released numerous albums with deep, compelling soundscapes, in which cello loops often play an important role. We can’t wait to hear her play together with Lubomyr Melnyk, which will definitely be an interesting musical crossover. And we haven’t even told you about SPIME.IM yet. More about that tomorrow!
🇳🇱 De 75-jarige Oekraïense Lubomyr Melnyk wordt gezien als een van de meest bijzondere pianisten van onze tijd. Hij weet als geen ander een ongelooflijke hoeveelheid pianoaanslagen per seconde te bereiken (een wereldrecord van 19,5 noten/seconde staat op zijn naam) waardoor deze als een bijna elektronische sound uit de piano opstijgen. Hij noemt zijn muziek niet voor niets continious music. Zo brengt Melnyk neo-klassiek, drone en ambient op een natuurlijke manier samen, om een volstrekt unieke sound te creeren.
🏴 Lubomyr Melnyk brings neo-classical, drone and ambient music together in a natural way, to create a completely unique sound. The 75-year-old Ukrainian pianist is seen as one of the most special pianists of our time. His extraordinary speed and ability creates effects on the piano no one has ever been able to play before, making it sound like electronic sounds coming from an acoustic piano. It’s the reason he calls his music continious music. With his extraordinary technique, he plays supersonic speeds of more than 19.5 notes per second in each hand, something most pianists can only dream of.

The End of the World is a collaboration between Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk, Canadian cellist Julia Kent (Anohni & The Johnsons) and the Turin audiovisual collective SPIME.IM. A combination of acoustic music, live electronics and impressive images merge together. Een van de absolute hoogtepunten van Birds of Paradise 2023 was de samenwerking tussen LUWTEN en het Belgische barokensemble B.O.X. De laatste kans om hen samen de prachtige liedjes van Luwten te horen en zien vertolken is op vrijdag 15 september in Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam. The American band @Son Lux combines electropop, chamber music, post-rock, hip-hop beats and a good dose of experimental drive into a unique and layered avant-pop sound. You could also see Son Lux as a sound laboratory in which music is deconstructed down to the molecule and then reassembled with surprising rhythms, orchestral arrangements and idiosyncratic sounds. Live, this leads to a mesmerizing experience. All led by Ryan Lott, who started Son Lux in 2008 as a solo project and expanded the project into a trio in 2014. The concept 'album' is also interpreted in its own way by Son Lux: the trilogy Tomorrows was released in 2020 and 2021, in 2022 the 49-track soundtrack of the film Everything Everywhere All At Once! 🎥 Ryan Lott has also regularly contributed to tracks and releases by Brooklyn-based Holland Andrews in recent years. Rules, featuring Nils Frahm is Andrew's most recent single, out on Frahm's own record label LEITER. Andrews composes, produces, plays clarinet and has a unique vocal technique: from grunt to classical vocals and everything in between. ✨
Combining polyrhythmic layered electronics with contemporary classical percussion, Jlin has been a whirlwind of innovation in the musical landscape throughout the past years. But Jerilynn Patton never struts too far away from organic, classical sounds: that’s why the Dutch Ragazze Quartet and the Grammy-winning, Chicago-based percussion outfit Third Coast Percussion bring Jlin’s tracks to the world of chamber music. First, the Ragazze Quartet will perform Little Black Book, originally commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, followed by the world premiere of Jlin’s Summon for string quartet and percussion. After that, Third Coast Percussion will perform a 7-piece suite entitled Perspective. The composer herself can be heard in the grand finale of the event: a live set featuring selected works from Akoma (The heart): a performative installation she will craft together with visual artist Florence To.
Please welcome a new flock of birds for our second installment! 👋 Between 15 and 19 March 2023, they will land in Utrecht (TivoliVredenburg) and… Antwerp.
