Last week I attended the presentation of this wonderful book: “Top Hole Records – 46 Jaar Eigenwijs“ (46 Years of Stubbornness). A beautifully written and designed publication by Jan Schlimbach and Jos Haijer, about the history and ups and downs of the indie label Top Hole — the label owned by Jos Haijer since 1980, for which I’ve been doing digitization and remastering work for about 15 years now. The final editing of the book was done by Wouter Bessels, with whom I often collaborate on beautiful re-releases.
Many artists are featured in it: Social Security, Weekend At Waikiki, The Toilets, Da Klute, La Danza Moderna, De Raggende Manne, and many others. It also includes, for instance, producer Michiel Hoogenboezem, who did his very first productions for that label. And then, on page 178, there I suddenly am — with an interview and photos of my face and studio! I’m honored! Now everyone, head to the bookstore!

This one came a looong way! Recorded in New Zealand in 1983 on this grandfather of home recording: the Teac 144 from 1979. The very first Portastudio. Four track on cassette at hi-speed (3,75ips) using Dolby B. The only porta to my knowledge using Dolby instead of the in later models featured DBX. Built like a tank and running like a charm. In this case, they used it as a 2tr master recorder on track 1 & 2. Tape flip included. 😸👌

Yesterday I teamed up with my German friend and colleague Thomas Körffer of to transfer some very legendary 1inch 4-track tapes from 1969. A format so rare in The Netherlands, I don’t have it myself. He has the perfect headstack on his 1inch Studer A80 to transfer these tapes. Always a pleasure to help each other out and join hands on missing formats. Enjoying his new coffee machine and Dutch stroopwafels! ❤️

Today I’m finishing up the archive of a pretty cool band from the other side of the pond from the late ‘70’s. Demos recorded on four very fat tracks on 1/4inch, 15ips at 320nWb/m on my Tascam 34B. I’m sure this can lead to a very cool release in the near future!

Next up: time for a few boxes filled up with stereo masters to work on the upcoming weeks. I’ll show you very soon! 😺👍

After six years of handwriting my “transferred” stickers to let the future know a tape has been transferred, it’s time for an upgrade! From now on these new stickers will tell you. It will still feature my scribbly handwriting, but only for the date. Oh yeah, and they’re waterproof! Happy archiving engineer here! Have a wonderful Christmas everybody! ✨🎄🤶

After a batch of stereo master tapes of a project, it’s always very cool to transfer the multitrack tapes. It doesn’t only gives me a look behind the curtain of a production, which is very interesting, but it sometimes reveals a whole world of unused material. That’s the case with the project I’m working on at the moment. Lots of studio jams, alternate takes and atmospheric tryouts. I can feel some bonustracks coming up. 😸👍

Today on the menu: DAT transfers of a legendary Dutch artist his tape archive 2000 to 2003. More than a hundred tapes in total and a real joy to work on.

All tapes are transferred in my Tascam DA-45HR DAT recorder. A 24bit DAT machine, but great on regular 16bit DAT tapes with help of an error counter. Some small errors are hardly noticable on a normal deck, but on this deck they can easily be located and fixed by redoing it or on another machine.

The “Total 02 Err” message is false alarm in this case. Errors can be detected when a new track or take was started when the recording was made. So errors inbetween songs can be ignored.

Outputting AES/EBU to my RME convertor for a true 1on1 digital copy. Ready for the future! 😺👍

Golden Earrings’ 1969 album “On The Double” got released as a remastered & expanded edition by Red Bullet. Remastered by Wouter Bessels who did a fantastic job. I got the honour to transfer all the master tapes. Since all previous releases, including the original LP were cut from second generation production masters, we took the opportunity to work from the first generation masters this time! The record never sounded this clean, open and dynamic before. Featuring liner notes written by Jeroen Ras. I’m very proud to be part of this project. I hope you like it as much as we did working on it!

Another great episode of Bart’s Classic Track by Bart Arens covering “Annabel” by Hans de Booy. I had the honour to provide the tape transfers. The original multitrack was 16 tracks on 1inch, transferred on my Tascam 85-16B. A flux of 320nWb/m with DBX noise reduction.

You can watch the episode on YouTube and even a longer version as a podcast on your favorite streaming service.

From the Red Bullet and Hans Kusters Music archives. Enjoy!

Today is Sony DASH day starring the Sony PCM-3348, 48 digital tracks on 1/2inch tape at 16bit and 44.1 or 48kHz. The output is the very ancient SDIF-2 format, but my Euphonix FC-727 takes care of it by converting it to a useful AES/EBU format.

Now playing: one of Dutch biggest singer-songwriters together with live at Paradiso Amsterdam in 1996. A beautiful recording! All 48 tracks are filled up, and even the rarely used two analog tracks are used for french horns which makes it a 50-track machine today. 😺👍

May I introduce to you, my new turntable! The Technics SL-1200 mk4. Released only in Japan in 1996, so I’m glad I found it on Dutch soil. Why this version? This one has, next to the usual 33 and 45RPM, 78RPM! So with the help of a special 78 stylus, your 78’s are welcome for transferring too! Regular LP’s and singles will meet my trusty Ortofon 2M Blue stylus.

But beware! Vinyl is not a costs effective shortcut to get your catalog online. Transferring tapes is faster and sounds much much better and usually don’t need any time consuming restoration. But when nothing else is available, this beauty will give your vinyl the best spins available! 😺👍
