Sounds Like Touch

Sounds Like Touch We connect makers with different skill sets for collaboration and exchange of knowledge.

We are a springboard for artists, designers and creators who like to make (literally) touching, electronic, performative arts by using their body for interaction.

The performance at Rewire Festival opened with Devosek, by Atser Damsma, Maisie Palmer and Demi van Kuijk (.am).

Partly veiled, the performer became a character that was both themselves and something else. As the costume moved, its arm-like forms produced fragmented sounds derived from archival recordings of these rituals, connecting physical movement to cultural memory.

Like in folk traditions or dragon dances, disbelief is suspended and the figure is accepted as its own entity, not just a person.

This work is the result of Tactology Lab 4, a structured programme spanning multiple days that brings artists and creators together to explore new ways of tactile interaction with electronics.

For Maisie, Demi and Atser the process involved continuous exchange and skill-sharing, from sewing and soldering to programming microcontrollers.

Rather than working in isolation, Maisie Palmer, Atser Damsma and Demi van Kuijk (.am) were involved in a process of continuous exchange and skill-sharing, from sewing and soldering to programming microcontrollers.

Roles emerged organically, while ideas were developed collectively through ongoing discussion and iteration.

“Our starting point was motion. From there, we followed our own interests. Maisie focused on textiles, Atser on fragmented sound, and I on oral histories and archival material. It felt very natural that our ideas came together this way.” - Demi van Kuijk

🏓Anna Bielska (), Alessandro Miele () and Junying Wu (), are fascinated by the back-and-forth motion of ping-pong balls and how their movement gradually diminishes, similar to the way a pendulum slows down.

From this curiosity, the idea emerged to launch hundreds of ping-pong balls into the air, letting them hit metal plates to create sound.

The performance balances control and unpredictability.

In this project each participant’s movement actively shapes the sound and structure of the performance. Every person is equally needed.

Inspiration came from playful experiences, such as children’s string games, which guided the design of a star-shaped rope configuration anchored in the performance space.

Over the past weeks Demi van Kuijk (.am), Atser Damsma and Maisie Palmer have been exploring of movement, textiles, and costume.

The work draws on ritualistic traditions such as May Day celebrations, where collective belief allows symbolic figures to be perceived as living entities.

As the costume moves, its arm-like forms produce fragmented sounds derived from archival recordings of these rituals, connecting physical movement to cultural memory.

katarina kadijević (), Nina (Alex) Buurman and Niek van der Veer (.vd.veer) have been creating an ‘entity’ that responds to human touch, creating a feedback loop between participant and object.

The project began as an open exploration: creating something that doesn’t necessarily look alive, yet gradually evokes a sense of life. Inspired by how people instinctively attribute emotions to robotics, the artists focus on how movement and behaviour can suggest aliveness.

Every person is equally needed 🪢 Cris Mollee (), Rachit Puri (.puri.16) & Kinga Molinska () constructed a large rope-based instrument designed as a responsive system that reacts to the movements of all participants.

Early on, the group explored multiple ideas, ultimately choosing rope as the central material because it enabled a truly collaborative performance.

The creative process of Junying Wu (), Anna Bielska () and Alessandro Miele () was both chaotic and highly productive.

Ideas emerged quickly, and the artists responded on the spot, building and testing components as they went. Tasks were divided according to skills, but much of the work happened collaboratively, blending hands-on making with conceptual development.

The unpredictability of materials and mechanics fuelled experimentation, making the process playful, dynamic, and iterative.

📍 Join us to experience this playful experimental work on Sunday April 12, 15:00 - 16:00 at The Grey Space in the Middle, The Hague.

How can we suggest aliveness? 📡✨‘The entity is sleeping, the people are the dream’ is a performance by Niek van der Veer, Nina (Alex) Buurman & katarina kadijević that will premiere on next weekend.

The group has been developing an ‘entity’ that responds to human touch, creating a feedback loop between participant and object. Through sound and material, the entity reacts, and is inviting a relationship rather than a one-sided action.

Tactology Lab 4: MOTION live at Rewire Festival 2026
At Sounds Like Touch, we believe that our bodies are key to expressing ourselves. We host programmes for artists to experiment on physical ways of interacting with technology.

Tactology Lab is our main program, which gathers twelve different makers in a 6-day pressure cooker in Utrecht to work towards performances in small groups, while being coached by experts.

This year’s edition of Tactology Lab is curated by Vincent Schoutsen () and Dianne Verdonk () and is about ‘MOTION’. In this fourth lab, participants have been experimenting with materials, bodily movements and electronics to lower the bar of transferring bodily movements into (electronic) artistic expression.

You are very welcome to experience the results of these collaborative processes in their joint performance at Rewire Festival 2026 .
