Take a look at these Dutch sayings that will make your brain hurt (translation included, understanding not guaranteed

🙈 “Nu komt de aap uit de mouw”
Now the monkey comes out of the sleeve, meaning the truth finally comes out. Why is there a monkey? Nobody knows.

🐟 “Er zit een luchtje aan”
There’s a little smell to it, meaning something feels fishy. Very Dutch to understate it this way.

🍪 “Een koekje van eigen deeg”
A cookie made of your own dough, meaning a taste of your own medicine. Who knew “stroopwafels” could be so mean?

This professional language network includes important stakeholders in the region, such as , .nl, , MST, and Taalhuis.

Together, we aim to make learning Dutch accessible and strengthen the ties between institutions, so everyone learning Dutch can find the place they fit best!

Ever walked past a Dutch home and thought… “are they actually okay with me looking in?” Turns out, yes, yes they are 👀

The open curtains aren’t an accident, it has deep historical roots. It goes back to the Dutch Calvinist tradition of the 17th century, where living transparently was seen as a moral virtue. Closing your curtains suggested you had something to hide. In a tight-knit community built on trust and social accountability, that was a big deal 🙏

Fast forward a few centuries and that mindset is still very much alive. For many Dutch people, open curtains signal that you’re an honest person. Your well-decorated living room isn’t just a personal space, it’s practically a contribution to the street’s aesthetic 🛋️✨

There’s also a practical side to it: the Netherlands isn’t exactly famous for its sunshine (understatement of the century 🌧️), so keeping curtains open makes the most of every precious ray of natural light.

As an international, it can feel jarring at first, maybe even a little invasive. But once you understand the cultural logic behind it, it’s actually kind of refreshing. Radical transparency, Dutch style! 🇳🇱🪟
