NOW at Leo XIII • winner of the Leoprijs 2020:
artist in residence JAMIE KANE

with curator FENNE SAEDT
MARCH - JUNE 2021

JAMIE KANE • Jamie Kane’s (SCO) practice can be likened to the behaviour of a dump, where time, information and material, bear upon, decay, and fuse with each other. The economy of the dump is one where temporalities, hierarchies, values and knowledges are loosened, undone and attributable in new ways. Although it is not always apparent, his biography is often a point of departure for the work, particularly his upbringing within a small village in the north of Scotland. His family has lived in this place for over a hundred years after his ancestors squatted the cottage that he was brought up in. This place and its surroundings enter into his work both directly and obliquely. He is interested in the personal, social and material stories of the things around us and how these build a set of affinities through time, that resonate and effect the present. This results in works predominantly in video, audio, sculpture and text, that strategically move between the minor, micro or ephemeral, to speak out to the major, macro and the enduring. Whether this is in finding an arsenic bottle protruding out the soil, the colour schemes of accommodation for seasonal farm labourers, the shifts in local dialect with that of economy, or old video footage found on a hard drive, who’s author is unknown; materials and the non-linear sets of relations they accumulate with time are drawn upon and intervene into the present

FENNE SAEDT • Fenne Saedt (NL) works as a freelance curator, editor and moderator. In 2017 she created the foundation of RUIS, an artspace for contemporary art that focuses on experiment and the development of young artists. Since then she has been the artistic director of this exhibition space in Nijmegen where she makes exhibitions in collaboration with young artists. She's also curator of the Expoplu Experiment section at Expoplu in Nijmegen, editor at contemporary art magazine mister Motley and scout/moderator for studio Omstand in Arnhem

BO STOKKERMANS //
28 February • Online presentation:

As possible art labourer Stokkermans saw himself working in the time given. What is the art labourer producing? Hesitant to submit to the time of art production, Stokkermans subsumed himself fully to the time provided. He ordered himself to the task set before him. Stokkermans saw himself order himself to the time of production. This is maybe where it gets tricky

Residency time is common production time in service of the common idea of art, the art labourer a common production labourer. The measures of art-time and non art-time are inter(c)locked in the end. Albeit there is one difference of course, work is performed here. One may ask though if not all work is performed, all work a performance in the space of time set before us. One can also then say: art labour is performance doubled. What then are this time and this labour? [•1 /2]

Since 2009 the Gastatelier Leo XIII foundation has been the driving force behind our artist in residence programme that has facilitated (international) artists with a space and resources to develop their work and artistry, to present and preserve their work through exhibitions and publications and to enrich their practice guided by external professionals from various fields. The artist and their development has always been Gastatelier Leo XIII's number one focus: investing in fair practice and (young) talent

We take great pride in what Gastatelier Leo XIII has become, for the foundation and evolution for which it stands. To help make this all possible and to ensure the 'fair practice code', Gastatelier Leo XIII has relied on several fundings from e.g. the Mondrian Fund and the municipality of Tilburg over the years. Unfortunately the municipality of Tilburg has decided to not grant Gastatelier Leo XIII the subsidy Artist Initiatives 2021-2024

Not receiving this grant means that the future of Gastatelier Leo XIII's residency programme and its mission as we've built it have become uncertain. We are forced to contemplate different strategies and are conducting local, regional and national talks with partners and parties in the hope of continuing to play a part in the development of artists, creating a sustainable future perspective for our programme - albeit in a (slightly) different way

Gastatelier Leo XIII's current programme will continue until this summer

Not only do we want to inform you, our friends, followers, cooperation partners and stakeholders about these current developments - we also want to make an appeal to share your ideas or suggestions

Do you want to partner up, express your ideas or support - please contact us through email: [email protected]
