A weathered face turned toward soft light, pale blue eyes holding a patient, almost amused focus. The mouth tightens into a private smile, and large, knuckled hands resting on a wooden cane suggest a quiet steadiness you can feel. Here's a small scene I wanted to share. A peeled orange rests on a dark surface, its spiral peel unfurling in a gentle S-curve. Warm light from the left makes the segments glow, revealing the glossy membranes and the soft fiber of the pith while the background sinks into deep umber. The rounded fruit anchors the top of the picture and the peel guides the eye back and forth, a simple balance of stillness and movement. I kept the colors restrained, orange, brown, and pale cream, so the shapes and light take the lead. I’m sharing Still Life With Bird Skulls, a low-lit tabletop arrangement I put together. It gathers a delicate wine glass, a mottled earthenware jar, a bright yellow flower, a lemon, speckled quail eggs, two small bird skulls and a scattering of feathers. Soft directional light sculpts each form, leaving the background near black and turning the glass rim into a thin highlight while warming the jar’s glaze. Muted ochres, deep umbers and olive greens hold the scene steady; the lemon and flower provide the only bright notes. The elements sit in a shallow arc that keeps a gentle tension between solidity and fragility. Reflections and subtle sheen sit beside matte, chalky surfaces, and the feathers add a quiet sense of movement.
