Onderwerp
Al jaren word ik geïnspireerd door het landschap. En dan bedoel ik vooral in cultuur gebracht landschap. Met wild en ruig, hoe mooi dat ook kan zijn, kan ik in mijn werk niet zo veel. Patronen, lijnen, ritme, vlakken, maar ook braak, groen, rijp, gemaaide velden, een bomenrij langs de weg of eenzame boom op een akker; het cultuurlandschap is mijn grootste inspiratiebron. En natuurlijk de
horizon en het schouwspel daarboven, wat de ruimte en de sfeer in belangrijke mate bepaald. De figuratieve elementen hebben enigszins een naïef karakter. Een bepalend element is de sfeer van een bepaalde tijd van de dag, of deel van het jaar. Steeds belangrijker hierbij is voor mij het effect van het licht. Het kleurgebruik in mijn schilderijen heeft zich ontwikkeld naar een vooral grijs palet, waardoor het licht een steeds belangrijkere rol is gaan spelen. (ik noem het graag een “kleurrijk” grijs)
Ik maak mijn schilderijen bij voorkeur in series met min of meer dezelfde maat, kleur, compositie en licht, om zo te streven naar tijdloos beeld, waarin genoemde sfeer en licht zijn gevangen. Schildertechniek
Op het doek breng ik met de kwast ongeveer 5 á 6 grondlagen aan en wel zodanig, dat er een mooie structuur van kwaststreken ontstaat. Het is behoorlijk tijdrovend, maar voegt wat sfeer betreft veel toe aan het schilderij. Het schilderen zelf gebeurt met transparante olieverf in verschillende lagen. In plaats van heel precies verf op te brengen met een penseel werk ik vaak andersom: ik breng veel verf aan en poets en schrap deze laag heel precies deels weer weg. Dit kan met een penseel gebeuren, maar ook met een doek, keukenpapier, wattenstaafjes, de achterkant van een penseel, of wat dan ook geschikt is om de juiste lijnen, vormen of veegjes te krijgen. Onder het begrip “Songlines”, werk ik vanuit het volgende concept:
Al de titels van mijn schilderijen zijn zinnetjes ( of stukjes daarvan) uit songteksten. Meestal van popmuziek, maar ook geschikte jazztitels, of wat dan ook. De term “Songlines” is ook een verwijzing naar het boek met die titel van Bruce Chatwin, in de Nederlandse vertaling ”De Gezongen Aarde”. Born in 1957

Subject
During all my years of painting I have been inspired by the landscape, especially the cultivated landscape. Wild, rough and virginal landscapes are beautiful too, but no subject of my paintings. The patterns, lines, rhythms and shapes of (harvested) fields, a line of trees along a road, a solitaire tree in a field, the houses which liven up the countryside; these are a few items that make the cultivated landscape so inspiring to me. And of course the sky above, adding space and atmosphere. Perspective is used in a playful way; sometimes flat, sometimes with depth, often both, and together with an emphasis on figurative details, it gives the paintings a more or less naive character. Painting Technique
On the canvas I put at least 5 or 6 layers of white, gesso-like paint. The brush strokes of these layers give a nice structure. Because I use transparent oil paint in several very thin layers, the structure remains visible, adding much atmosphere to the painting. Instead of adding the paint precisely with a brush, I work the other way around; I put on a lot of paint and then I carefully remove some of it, while “drawing” in the wet paint with a brush, the backside of a brush, a cloth, a tissue, a Q-tip or whatever is suitable for making the lines, the forms, the dots etc. The Titles
All the titles I use are lines (or parts of lines) from song lyrics. Mostly from pop music, sometimes a title of a jazz song. There are so many references to the landscape to be found, (and the sky, the weather, the time of day, the time of year, and so on), which I thankfully use. Usually I give the title to the painting when it is finished, browsing through my collection of songlines and selecting the most appropriate one. But sometimes I make a painting with a particular songline in mind. Working from this concept is inspired the novel “The Songlines”, by Bruce Chatwin.
