Las Américas Film Festival

At Las Américas Film Festival, we love to start conversations. In all shapes and forms, and in different languages!

Apart from hosting screenings and filmmaker Q&As, we invite people from different communities and walks of life to Filmhuis Den Haag: from artists and activist to diplomats. People who can take us beyond the screen, share their knowledge and experiences, challenge perspectives, answer questions and teach us something we didn’t know before.

And just as importantly, we want our visitors to talk to each other! To exchange ideas, discover different perspectives, meet someone they might otherwise never have met and, perhaps, even create a community around cinema.

Films bring us together, but we make sure the conversation doesn’t stop when the lights come back on.

And this year, there was plenty to talk about!

𝙎𝙬𝙞𝙥𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 →



At our 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘧𝘦́, language became the starting point for conversation. Musician, composer, instrument maker, dancer and storyteller 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮 filled the room with live Aymara music and introduced visitors to Aymara, an Indigenous Andean language, and Spanish.

Everyone was invited to join in to practise different languages, swap words and stories, and simply getting to know the people sitting next to them.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘇𝗮 gave an introduction to Brazilian Portuguese.

𝘌𝘶 𝘝𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘦 𝘝𝘰𝘤𝘦̂ is a trailblazing film featuring an all-transgender cast and following a couple as they navigate love, ambition, intimacy and change after seven years together.

Members of the local trans community, 𝗝𝗼’𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮 (𝗝𝗼𝗷𝗼) 𝗠𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗴𝗹𝗲𝗿, known internationally for her runway and performance work in the ballroom scene, and 𝗥𝗼́𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗥𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗼, joined us to talk about the importance of portraying trans lives on screen with nuance and complexity.

The conversation was moderated by transdisciplinary artist and performer 𝗠𝗮𝘃𝗶 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝗺𝗲́𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. 🎬 It’s not every day you get to watch a film and then ask the director everything you’ve been wondering about ten minutes after the credits roll!

This year, several filmmakers joined us at 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗵𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗮𝗴 for post-screening Q&As, moderated by our festival programmer 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗢𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘇 (author and activist), offering a unique chance to dive deeper into the films.

Following our 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙢𝙚, filmmaker 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿 (𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘮), 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗶 (𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘢: 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, winner of Best Indigenous Short Film 🏆) and 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗶𝗸 (𝘙𝘪𝘰 𝘥𝘢𝘴 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘴) joined us to talk about Indigenous storytelling, representation, resistance and environmental protection.

Another memorable conversation followed our other short film programme with filmmaker 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝗻̃𝗼𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀, director of 𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘢, which received the Audience Award for Best Short Film 🏆.

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴! 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝘀! 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀! 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝗺𝗲́𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀.

💃 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 got everyone twirling during their traditional Colombian Cumbia workshop.
Afterwards, people learned to shake up their own mezcalita or caipirinha in a cocktail workshop hosted by 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗮. 🍹

And the cinema was packed too, with sold-out features and shorts bringing a wide variety of stories from across the Americas and the Caribbean to the big screen at Filmhuis Den Haag. 🎬

𝗔 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝗺𝗲́𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲. 🎬

The Bolivian Embassy honoured us with a traditional Pachamama ceremony, an Andean ritual that expresses gratitude to Mother Earth and asks for blessings for the journey ahead 💫 Safe to say, we couldn’t have asked for a better start. The warmth and positive energy of that moment carried through the evening and, in many ways, set the tone for the weeks that followed.

But back to night one... the photos speak for themselves. Our opening screenings were packed, DJ Meras brought the house down with eclectic Latin beats, Quila’s delicious bites disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived, and Filmhuis Den Haag kept the caipirinhas flowing 🪩🌮🍹

We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s edition happen: film lovers, filmmakers, volunteers, sponsors and partners. Thank you for celebrating the stories, cultures and communities of Latin America and the Caribbean with us in the heart of The Hague. 🙏

This year, we organised the very first edition of Las Américas Market Day: a chance to experience some of the (indigenous) arts and crafts, rituals, dance, flavours and music of Latin America and the Caribbean before our film festival kicked off.

We found so many wonderful, passionate and knowledgeable people who wanted to help bring this day to life, and we kept our fingers crossed that you’d be just as excited about this idea as we were.

And wow, were we overwhelmed by the response!

So many of you came together to share traditions, learn something new, support local makers, celebrate culture and connect with one another. You showed up with curiosity, generosity and open hearts, and we’re incredibly grateful for that.
