Let me share the process of the concept development of AWASEed. The practice to translate body movement to space through the material. I start using sugar as the media.

I start recapturing the concept: AWASEed from previous work.
One of the challenges of the performance piece "Void Unvers" was the relationship between the performer and the audience. The audience had to move their own body to enter the gallery space and it forces them to be free from the aim of "audience". There was no hierarchy between the artist, the audience even space itself. I'm very exciting to organize my workshop "AWASEed" at ISS, International Institute of Social Studies in Den Haag for students who studies social science. I'm interested in how participants, who mainly work for solving social issues, experience my concept: enjoy contradiction.

Workshop "AWASEed (A: I don't like you.) (B: Yes me too.)"

"AWASEed" is a strategy to challenge the status of self that I’ve developed for coexistence without mutual understanding. “AWASEed(A: I don’t like you.) (B: Yes, me too.)” is the workshop where the participants experience this concept through body movements and linguistics, focusing on a variety of contradictions on both personal and social levels, and regarding those contradictions as potentials instead of problems. Participants perceive “contradictions” as negative, but when not consciously deliberating their actions, their bodily movements become natural. The participants’ performances show that creativity in the conflict goes beyond the intellect and become manifested in the body. The process to enjoy contradiction changed static perception to dynamic recognition.

AWASEed

The method of the dialectic widely used within culture and arts. It originated already in Ancient Greece and had been very influential in philosophical circles. It has developed by Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, but was systematized and established as a method by German philosopher George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Since then, it has become a foundational technique to develop political and social theories, philosophy, the educational system and all European way of thinking. The aim of the method of the dialectic is creating a synthesis (a new subject) between a thesis and its opposite, an anti-thesis. The method of the dialectic is built upon a theory of individualism, which shows clear borders between subjects. Within history, European countries always strove for political resolutions in times of conflict.

“Awase” is the act of matching and it was played as a game in the Heian period(794-1185) in Japan. Players turned over clam shells, which all have a different drawings on them. One player picks two of them randomly and has to compare and contrast the two drawings in order to find their similarities and differences. The goal of Awase is not to merge two objects into one, but rather to enjoy the change in perception that happens when two objects are put together.

When there is conflict between two elements we can enjoy the gap, conflict and contradiction, instead of resolving it.
