Hey everyone - Jimding made it through our world premiere last Sunday relatively unscathed — three solid sets with the crowd in the living room overflowing into the kitchen and lots of smiling faces. So now it’s now on to bigger and better things! It’s was great to see not only friends, family and neighbors, but plenty of folks who were just curious. Thanks to all who stopped by and for the kind words. And special thanks to Pat who not only kept me calm in the days leading up to last Sunday, but also helped with everything from rearranging the furniture and greeting the visitors to serving as chief cook and bottle washer.

All things must pass ...

Katvanger friends and fans -- It's true, though I've waited more than a year to formally announce it. Katvanger gave up the ghost in October 2022. In various forms (at first we didn't even have a name) we'd been carrying on for more than 20 years, beginning as a spinoff of Jim Wake & Sleepwalker. Lots of good times and good music, and then it was time to move on. I plan to keep this page and the Katvanger website (Katvanger.com) going at least for a while. Thanks for all the kind words and support over the years.

Hi there - I'm pleased to announce that I've got a new band. Katvanger gave up the ghost in October 2022 and after laying low for almost a year, I connected with several like-minded old codgers. We're now (nearly) ready to go public and the world premiere of the new band (drumroll) -- Jimding -- is scheduled for Sunday, February 4. We're playing in a "living room festival" which means, in this case, literally in my own living room. Three sets at 12:45, 14:15, and 15:45. We'd love to see some familiar faces there, so mark it on your calendars.

A suspect rendition of the blues

They all purport to be fine, upstanding, law-abiding citizens, but collectively, Katvanger offers up a suspect rendition of the blues, revealing undocumented encounters with disreputable elements from far-flung parts of the globe. Bass player Ruud Fransen, who claims to have retired from the teaching profession, and guitarist Jan Vereçki, a part-time IT tinkerer with an extensive collection of off-brand stringed instruments, accompany singer and guitar player Jim Wake, whose whisky-tinged voice belies his claims of a comfortable middle-class upbringing.

That they sing of pain, betrayal and abandonment cannot really be so surprising. But Katvanger does manage to surprise, with an extensive repertoire of originals full of irony as well as harmony, and equal portions of sarcasm and swing. Apart from dubious blues, Katvanger features slightly twisted roots, counterfeit country & western, improbable jazz, and on occasion, an obscure cover. All completely above-board, but beware: the music can be infectious.
