PREDESTINATION (2026)
After Claude-Marie Dubufe’s a Vierge à l’enfant (Virgin and Child), currently housed at the Musée de Picardie in Amiens.
Claude-Marie Dubufe was a French academic painter whose religious commissions were designed to make the sacred approachable. The tenderness of Vierge à l’enfant is deliberate, with thin gold halos, delicate light and the child leaning into his mother. It was the kind of image that got reproduced and distributed until it became part of the visual furniture of Catholic Europe.
On Finch’s version, the Christ child is holding a crucifix. The figure on the cross is not Christ. It is a Barbie doll, pink, arms outstretched, in the position of the passion.
