👩‍🎨🖼️ A tiny acquisition with a grand story!

The Mauritshuis has added a remarkable little painting to its collection: an ivory miniature created by Wilhelmina of Prussia. She was the wife of William V, Prince of Orange, the last Stadtholder of the Netherlands. William V owned a major art collection and was the first in the Netherlands to make it publicly accessible, in Prince William V Gallery. Among the works in that collection was the Portrait of Peeter Stevens (c. 1590–1668) by Anthony van Dyck. Wilhelmina of Prussia later created this beautiful miniature copy of that painting.

We are delighted that this remarkable work, part of both the history of the Mauritshuis and the history of the Netherlands, is now on display at the Mauritshuis. The miniature is currently on view in Gallery 2, alongside the Anthony van Dyck painting that served as its model. Next year, it will return to the Prince William V Gallery, where its story began.

👩‍🎨🖼️ Een kleine aanwinst, met een groots verhaal!

Het Mauritshuis heeft een bijzonder schilderijtje toegevoegd aan de collectie: een miniatuur op ivoor, gemaakt door Wilhelmina van Pruisen. Zij was de vrouw van prins Willem V, de laatste stadhouder der Nederlanden. Prins Willem V had een grote kunstverzameling die hij als eerste in Nederland publiek toegankelijk maakte in Galerij Prins Willem V. Onderdeel van die collectie was het schilderij Portret van Peeter Stevens (c. 1590 - 1668) van Athony van Dyck. En daar schilderde Wilhelmina van Pruisen weer dit mooie kopietje van. We zijn heel blij dat dit mooie werk, dat zowel onderdeel is van de geschiedenis van het Mauritshuis als die van Nederland, nu in het Mauritshuis te zien is.

Het miniatuur is op dit moment te zien in zaal 2, naast het schilderij dat zij als voorbeeld gebruikte van Anthony van Dyck. Volgend jaar zal het werk teruggaan naar Galerij Prins Willem V, waar het allemaal begon.

❣️ Planning a visit to the Mauritshuis? Catch Girl with a Pearl Earring while you can!

💙 You can admire Johannes Vermeer's iconic masterpiece at the Mauritshuis until Thursday 14 August. After that, the painting will travel to the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan. From the 5th of October, the painting will be back on display at the Mauritshuis.

💙 Please note that the Mauritshuis will be closed to the public for maintenance from Monday 24 August to Sunday 20 September.

💙Vrijdag 15 augustus tot en met zondag 4 oktober is 'Meisje met de parel' van Johannes Vermeer niet te zien in het museum. Het schilderij is tijdelijk te zien in het Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan. Vanaf 5 oktober hangt het schilderij gewoon weer in het Mauritshuis.

💙 Vanaf maandag 24 augustus tot en met zondag 20 september is het Mauritshuis vanwege werkzaamheden gesloten voor publiek.

🦀🍺Don't be crabby! Let's play a little game. On the left side of this painting, you see a tall glass known as a Passglass, used in drinking games. Players would pass around the glass, attempting to drink to the next ring of the glass in one big gulp. Missed the line? Then you had to keep drinking until the next one!

🦀🍺Tijd voor een spelletje: Links op dit stilleven staat een torenhoog glas, ook wel bekend als een pasglas. Het doel was om in één teug precies op één van de ringen uit te komen. Heb je het streepje gemist? Dan moet je doordrinken tot de volgende!

The still lifes in Prince William V’s collection are all on the exuberant side. Rather than modest breakfast pieces or memento mori, there are lavish floral and hunting still lifes, as well ornate still lifes (pronkstillevens). This type of painting was well suited to a royal collection such as that of the prince.

These days we might find the display of dead animals a bit, well, much. Typical of Frans Snijders is the playful cat that has set his sights on the hanging head of the dead turkey.

De stillevens in de verzameling van prins Willem V zijn van het uitbundige soort. Hier geen bescheiden ontbijtjes of vermanende memento mori´s, maar overdadige bloemstukken, pronkstillevens en jachtstillevens. Die passen namelijk het best in een vorstelijke verzameling als die van de prins.

Tegenwoordig vinden veel mensen al die dode beestjes een beetje intens. Kenmerkend voor Snijders is het speelse katje dat zijn zinnen heeft gezet op de bungelende kop van de kalkoen.

What's the prettiest flower in this lovely bunch? We definitely have our favourites.

This bouquet is painted much more freely than those of his predecessors, and is restricted to just a few types of flower. This makes it easier to imagine that this elegant bouquet actually existed. The flowers exude an air of exclusivity, which is reinforced by the costly vase of Chinese porcelain and the collection of exotic shells.

Welke bloem op dit schilderij is jouw favoriet?

Van der Ast introduceerde een aantal belangrijke vernieuwingen in het bloemstilleven. Hij schilderde dit boeket veel losser dan zijn voorgangers deden en beperkte zich tot maar een paar bloemsoorten. Daardoor kun je je beter voorstellen dat dit elegante boeket echt bestaan heeft.

De bloemen stralen exclusiviteit uit. Dat wordt versterkt door het kostbare vaasje van Chinees porselein en de verzameling exotische schelpen.

If you're not paying close attention, you might miss the miraculous events happening in this scene. The imaginary landscape dominates with its turbulent sea, fairy-tale mountains, bustling harbour, and an endless sense of depth.

This Greek landscape provides the backdrop for a Bible story from the Book of Revelations: the vision of John, in which he sees Mary and her child appear in heaven.

Als je niet goed oplet, mis je misschien wel het wonder dat zich voltrekt in dit schilderij. Het Griekse fantasielandschap trek je aandacht, met de onrustige zee, de sprookjesachtige bergen en de rijke havenstad. En met die eindeloze verte. Het vormt de setting voor een verhaal uit het Bijbelboek Openbaring. Het is het visioen van Johannes, die ziet hoe Maria en kind aan de hemel verschijnen.

👗This painting is an absolute highlight in the oeuvre of Metsu, who was a master in depicting fabrics and materials. The beautiful colours, the draping and the way the light hits the fabrics simply steal the show here.

We see a young woman composing a song, while a man looks over her shoulder and another woman plays on her lute. This instrument may refer to the harmony of a happy marriage. To counterbalance it, there is a painting of a ship in stormy seas hanging over the mantelpiece – an allusion to the fickleness of love?

👗Dit schilderij is één van de absolute hoogtepunten uit het oeuvre van Metsu. Hij was een ware meester in de weergave van textielen materialen. De prachtige kleuren, de vouwen van de kleding en de manier waarop het licht weerkaatst op de stoffen stelen hier de show.

We zien een jonge vrouw die een lied schrijft, terwijl een man over haar schouder meekijkt en een andere vrouw op haar luit speelt. Dat instrument zou kunnen verwijzen naar harmonie in een gelukkig huwelijk. Als tegenwicht daarvoor hangt boven de haard een schilderij met een schip in een woeste zee – een zinspeling op de wisselvalligheid van de liefde?

👀Imagine visiting a museum for a glimpse of the past, but you find that history is looking right back at you!

Meet Huygh Pietersz Voskuyl, peering out of his frame as though we've just interrupted him at work. In fact this is simply what the artist saw reflected in the mirror when he painted his self-portrait. His straggly hair, unshaven cheeks and unkempt moustache lend this self-portrait an air of informality unusual for portraits of the Dutch seventeenth century.

👀Soms bezoek je een museum om een blik te werpen op de geschiedenis, maar wat als die blik beantwoord wordt?

Huygh Voskuyl kijkt ons fronsend aan, alsof we hem onderbreken in zijn bezigheden. Maar in feite is dit de weergave van wat Voskuyl in zijn spiegel zag toen hij dit zelfportret maakte. Zijn piekende haren, ongeschoren kaken en flodderige snor geven dit zelfportret een informele uitstraling die uitzonderlijk is voor portretten uit de 17de eeuw.
