About Thom Vink (NL only)

Looking out to the sea, waves under waves, flipping over each other, lines interact with the ones above and below. Like an undercurrent, the possible unknown hidden in the blackest black are reviewed/recreated with Julvian HO’s marks of charcoal, pencil and graphite, awaiting lights to penetrate. The organic lines form a seascape of softened shapes, merged and unified. Opening this Saturday at Quartair at 6 pm.

Jamsen Law, the curator of next exhibition Under Line, is also one of the participating artists. Law uses the arrangements of the space, a selection of his artworks, lighting, additional objects and decorations, as well as a new set of artwork(s) of his, to create unique experiences for each edition. Treating each exhibition site as a new canvas or a white theatre, more possibilities are attempted to be discovered from the expandable artworks created by other participating artists. Opening this Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 at Quartair!

In Quartair they are going to perform as a trio, so You will hear the Bad Tones lite version.

‘’SOUND WE SEE: RIGA’’ [2017]
On 30th November in Quartair there will be the special screening of a short film ‘’Sound we see: Rīga’’. Sound we see is an Echo Park Film Center [Los Angeles, USA] project series, where they use analogue film making techniques and the concept of ‘’City Symphony’’ – genre practiced in the 1920s by Walter Ruttman and Dziga Vertov.
Sound we see projects have been done in cities such as Tokyo, Los Angeles, Rotterdam, London, Seoul, Berlin, Mexico city and Vancouver.
The goal of ‘’Sound we see: Rīga’’ guest directors – Paolo Davanzo and Lisa Marr, senior heads at the Echo Park Film center – was to bring together 24 representatives from various art fields, teach them how to work with 16mm cameras so that they can capture Riga over a period of 24hours. The result is a 24 minute long black and white journey through the capital city.
A story about today’s Riga is created by 24+1 vividly creative figures from Latvia: Agnese Krivade, Aigars Bikse, Anda Lāce, Ansis Starks, Atis Jakobsons, Evelina Ozola, Gunārs Binde , Ieva Epnere , Jānis Putniņš , Karlina Vitolina, Katrīna Neiburga, Kristians Brekte, Krišs Salmanis , Maija Kurševa, Martins Grauds, Mikelis Bastiks, Miķelis Putniņš , Pauls Bankovskis, MAREUNROL'S Rolands Peterkops , Sergejs Timofejevs , Odrija Fišere , Signe Birkova , Viesturs Meikšāns, Andris Freibergs , Zanete Skarule.
Music composed and performed by: Platons Buravickis, Jēkabs Nīmanis (clarinet) and Eriks Kiršfelds (cello).
Produced by Arterritory.com & Echo Park Film Center and supported by Baltic American Freedom Foundation, the Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia and Live Riga.

Special thanks to Zanete Skarule and Elīza Elizabete Ramza for possibility to screen it in The Hague!

‘’I find excitement in finding hidden gems, things that have always been there, but not usually noticed by the passers-by. Either it is a big social or environmental issue concerning the whole planet Earth, or just a shopping list left behind in a supermarket basket, ‘’ tells Gundega Strauberga about the work she will exhibit at Quartair.

After graduating from Riga School of Design and Art, she decided to come to Design Academy Eindhoven to explore a different approach to design. This is where the boundaries of the term are flexible and reaching far out.
She likes to put familiar things into a new context and give them another meaning, something that would strike you at a second glance. Gundega recognizes that there are enough tools around us, templates and media that we can use to tell a story that everyone can relate to. For her it is important that the message is understandable, therefore she likes to use familiar 'images', to create some sort of 'collages' that would reflect upon different issues of humanity.
She has done solo-exhibition of self-made collages (Riga, Latvia, 2015) : "Where Are My Flip-Flops?", has exhibited her work ‘’Franky Tongues’’ in ‘’Frankenstein, I think therefore I am’’ in Museum TwentseWelle (Enschede, Netherlands) and also in manifestations Exhibition for Dutch Design Week 2018 (Eindhoven, Netherlands.)

Sabine Vernere has graduated Art Academy of Latvia, department of painting, with both bachelor’s and master degrees. Meanwhile expanded her skills also in Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb, Croatia and Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Since 2009 she has participated in more than 18 group exhibitions and has done three solo shows. Now she has returned to live and work in Antwerp.
In her works you can see her great ability of controlling the unpredictable flow of Indian ink and how she expresses within abstractions our own subconscious flux.

Nanda Milbreta

Stands out in this group because of her long term connection to The Hague. You may have already seen her work, because after graduating from the Latvian Academy of Culture, she left Latvia for good - graduating firstly from the sound recording department at the University of Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, she came to The Hague to continue her studies at ArtScience at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, and then at the Koninklijk Conservatorium - Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
She works together with Leon Spek who also earned his master’s degree at ArtScience.
Since 2007 they work together as the duo Neon & Landa [ http://www.neon-landa.com/ ], making experimental musical instruments, expanding their projects into autonomous sound and light installations and sculptures.

Rūdolfs Štamers studies visual communication at Art Academy of Latvia, afterwards expanded his studies in KASK & CONSERVATORIUM School of Arts Gent. After several group exhibitions in Latvia, he has now returned to Belgium to do an internship and work with Guillaume Bijl. One of the artists who you will be able to meet in Hoogtij night at Quartair is Estere Betija Grāvere. Latvian artist from Art Academy of Latvia who now continuous her studies in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Her main work field is printmaking with such a works as the label for Latvian special edition beer Malduguns, visual identity for the Latvian band EZERI, illustrations for books and more to tell by her in person.
At Quartair You will see her newest print series about, to Latvians so familiar, but outside such a rare phenomenon as the rye bread. But out of the long love for set design [she has tried her hand in it as well], she will use the space of Quartair and exhibit something also outside of the frames.

Quartair is gevestigd in 'De Haagsche Broodfabriek' H.B.F. Quartair was funded in 1992 as a non-profit organisation by a group of young artists, whom just finished their study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In the monumental building of Quartair, 'The Hague Breadfactory' from 1902, 10 artists now have a studio and on the groundfloor there is a galleryspace of 200 m2. In 2010 the building is been renovated by the City of The Hague. Quartair is one of the oldest functioning artist-initiatives of The Hague. Quartair, a platform for production, presentation and artistic debate. Quartair aims to organise exchanges, exhibitions and activities with artists and art-initiatives at home and abroad. Collaboration with other cultural organisation is an ambition. Quartair creates a platform for artists in The Hague and opperates in a international network with attention for developments in contemporary art. www.quartair.nl Quartair is run by artist: Pietertje van Splunter, Jessy Rahman, Harold de Bree, Geeske Harting, Erik-Jan Ligtvoet,Thom Vink, Mike Rijnierse, Ludmila Rodrigues, Wieteke Heldens, Astrid Nobel and Marlies Adriaanse. check the websites http://www.pietertje.net http://www.jessyrahman.nl http://www.harolddebree.nl http://home.kpn.nl/mjadriaanse http://www.erikjanligtvoet.nl http://www.geeskeharting.nl http://www.mikerijnierse.nl http://www.tinamustao.com http://www.wietekeheldens.com/home.html http://www.astridnobel.nl http://www.thomvink.com
