🎹 Bill Evans completely changed harmonic reality.

His harmonic language is rich, sophisticated, and highly refined, yet his music still feels remarkably natural and direct. How did he achieve that?

In this preview, I explore some of the core elements of Evans' musical DNA:
✓ Functional harmony and the use of pivot chords
✓ Chromatic voice leading in practice
✓ Disguised dominant functions and sus chords
✓ Structural devices such as added bars that subtly increase the emotional intensity of a composition

Using examples from B Minor Waltz, we'll explore how Evans could transform the harmonic landscape while keeping the melodic material surprisingly simple.

Residing in a sterile Dropbox folder, I found this track that features Marco Kegel on alto saxophone and yours truly on piano, performing a spontaneious rendition that pays tribute to Bill Evans 'Waltz for Debby'. It was screaming: '𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗺𝗲!'

This live jazz recording captures the essence of a remarkable performance, reminiscent of the cool jazz era.
