The Kala Pani: 1873-2023 catalog launch event was organized together with ***r & with support from in The Hague. Three organizations that feel very close to my heart. The Hang-Out 070 is really where all my community work and learning began 8 years ago, so it feels like the perfect space to launch this publication that feels so significant to me as a q***r Indo-Caribbean artist. I will be posting about this catalog more the next few days, but for now, I want to acknowledge the people who made this event the most memorable for me.

I may seem like I'm always motivated and working on something, but the state of the world makes it a struggle to stay hopeful and convinced that the small things we do actually make a difference. I'm grateful for this community I have here that makes me feel so supported and appreciated.

I approached someone to share their reflections on this drawing. To me it's a depiction of a q***r utopian city built of influences from around the world.

This is what she came up with. How would you reflect on this?

"The world we made stopped earlier this year. Not the natural one of course. The sun still rose and set, dilligently trading places with the moon each day. And now it's like somebody's trying to kickstart the engine that is doing everything it can to turn over. Relics of the stopping are visible everywhere from advertisements for grand debuts scheduled for April 2020 that never happened or sidewalks spotted with face coverings. We've had the chance to reexamine not just our world but our very selves in this process. Accidentally showed ourselves that a new world might be possible. Of injustice not being allowed to hide after its failed more of us than we can count. Of time being something we actually have a lot more of. Of priorities and values allowed to be something communal rather than corporate. Of what essential actually means. If knowledge is power, what are we going to do with this? And if power brings with it responsibility, what will we do with that?" - Aparna Shrivastava
