PAE PAE is Performance Art Event a platform in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

To advance understanding of performance art, Performance Art Event (PAE) organizes events dedicated exclusively to the form, often creating a space for improvisation in the most radical sense. We think performance art often plays a supportive role in events devoted to visual art, but the perishable character of live performance can be considered a starting point for initiating transgressions acros

s definitions and media. PAE strives to realize performances in close collaboration with international artists by offering support and creating an environment best suited for appreciating their work. We look forward to growing as a platform and to raising awareness of performance as a practice. And we welcome anyone interested in visual art to attend our events and to inquire into the ways in which performance is being renewed.

It's been almost two years ago that I performed Unsacking (my first performance in India, during my first visit to India). It was on December 11, 2022, at the Sabji Mandi (vegetable market) at District 26, Chandigarh. I was intrigued by the materiality of the jute sack that, as a child growing up on a farm, I had played with a lot. For the performance, I took one jute sack and unraveled it with my bare hands until the sack was transformed into a pile of rope. It took me six and an half hour to have the whole sack transformed. During my action I remained in one spot and experienced the dynamics of the public space, its sounds and traffic passing by, and the neighbors their activities.

Thank you B Ajay Sharma and in_process (Live Art Practice) community for facilitating and supporting my art. Thank you Keshav Soni, Priya Uphadhyay, and B Ajay Sharma for documenting my performance. Nandu De-Kl thank you for making my first visit to India possible.

Here long video edit for you to get a feeling of the space.

Performance 'Healing Batik' by Nina Boas.

"After sitting stately on a stool with her face covered for quite some time, Nina Boas is the last to begin her performance. It consists of four parts that she performs in a circle. Perhaps placed in the four cardinal directions, I think. She serves us a pink, sweet drink, lights scents, draws a figure on paper with a mixture of black ink and cinnamon powder, hands out books from which we can read parts aloud and reads from a subsidy report by her father and an article about his work. For each part she wears a different mask that I always find very special. Her performance seems to be a collection of her sources of inspiration for her current work. It has a lot to do with Indonesia, where her father was born, lives and worked as an artist. Digging for your sources to bring them to light in a quest between origin, cultural identity and cultural appropriation." (Martine van Ditzhuyzen)

Performance 'Sunflower Shower' by Toine Klaassen.

"In addition to the beautiful exhibition by Toine Klaassen in the space, he also gives a performance. He appears to be a master in constructing soundscapes. First he walks around with two pan lids that he slides against each other. He composes with small metal bowls that he hits with the chains of bath plugs. In this way he also makes subtle sounds for the performance of others, especially for WeiZen Ho. His performance is poetic and ingenious, especially when he later ''showers'' under a large faded sunflower that releases its seeds when shaken. These seeds fall onto the singing bowls and create a surprising tingling symphony." (Martine van Ditzhuyzen)

Performance 'The Almanac, The Husk (Cover me in Time)' by WeiZen Ho.

"When I enter, WeiZen Ho is already busy with her performance. Crawling and agonizingly slowly, she moves with a thin plank of wood on her back, on which she sits. She invites us to dip sheets of paper with sticks in the water and then place them on her uncovered body. After a while, she will be completely covered with paper like a mummy. With full attention, I perform actions. The sticks remind me of food. For me, it is something between taking in food and distributing food. A ritualistic meal. Moreover, because the paper is soaked in cold water, I see her body shiver. It is also remarkable that the sheets of paper are part of a Chinese calendar. Each sheet has a day number. So we also cover her with time. Later, she performs a dance while singing that is reminiscent of a mixture of Butoh and stylized Asian dance. The paper on her body that comes loose during the dance resembles the shedding of a snake. I wonder if she doesn’t want to be touched, and uses the sticks to keep people’s touch at bay? Or does she choose the sticks because of the attention and care it takes to not drop the paper? Time, new skin, food, shedding, shivers. I can’t quite cognitively reconcile it, but that doesn’t matter. It fills me with a sensitive and delicate sensory feeling. And which may be the point of performance art." (Martine van Ditzhuyzen)

Performance 'indiculus superstitionem et paganiarum' by sieger baljon.

"Outside in the small garden, adjacent to WOLk, sieger baljon is busy. He is performing 30 rituals incessantly, based on an 8th-century list of 30 Saxon and Frisian traditions that had been banned by the church. He sings, declaims, in a language unknown to me (Old Dutch and Old High German, it turns out), shares nature observations that he made that morning, dances, makes rhythmic compositions with objects, shifts earth, runs, honors his ancestors. It is a physical battle of attrition. Sometimes he is lost in his own world, sometimes he communicates directly with us. That variation is pleasant. I then feel part of his ritual. He often acts with his upper body bare and in the cold of that day I feel sorry for him. But it reflects something of the experienced pain, fear and especially the strength that was needed at the time, due to the prohibition on performing the rituals." (Martine van Ditzhuyzen)

Through the WALK WITH ME Rotterdam callout, WeiZen Ho had residents in Rotterdam and its surrounding areas, who have offered her a walk that is meaningful to them.

Thank you for the generosity and time of the walkers:
Yvette Teeuwen, HIEW Miao Yein, Kamila Wolszczak, ANG Sat Chen, Raziel Yauri Miranda, Josef, Charlien Adriaenssens, Joop, Chris Lim, Ade, NJOO Khing Huang, ieke Trinks, and Joseph Ravens.

About the sharing process at Leeszaal:
WeiZen has also evolved this process to include an ensemble improvisation sharing from the walkers and herself, as an embodied response to their shared experience.

This research process has been made possible in collaboration with ieke Trinks who has facilitated the administration and production process.

We want to thank Leeszaal West for their hospitality.
