Rotterdam Photo is an annual photo fair with a festival flair, celebrating contemporary photography

We will transform the location near the harbor into a street-wise photography village populated by 90+ shipping containers repurposed into exhibition spaces. In addition to the exhibitions, Rotterdam Photo organizes talks, workshops, and a fringe program with music and digital installations throughout the city. The festival feeling is created thanks to various exhibitions and leisure activities for all participants. Street vendors, cafes, and restaurants on the festival's location offer great food and delicious drinks - the public and participants can enjoy the events' atmosphere, celebrating photography together with us.

With Open Call Spotlight, we're sharing a closer look at projects submitted to the Rotterdam Photo 2027 Open Call — and the ideas, questions and perspectives behind them.

In Claus stolpert, photographer Valerie Schmidt captures a man repeatedly losing his balance as he moves through The Hague. Across 34 photographs, an everyday stumble becomes something unexpected: a mix of absurdity, humour and performance.

Against the city's ordered architecture, Claus's unpredictable movements interrupt the familiar rhythm of urban life. A tilted body, a lifted coat, a fleeting shadow — moments of instability become striking expressions of vulnerability and presence.

Because sometimes, it's when things don't go according to plan that something interesting happens.

PHILIPP TREUDT - BEYOND THE GALLOP

With Open Call Spotlight, we're sharing a closer look at projects submitted to the Rotterdam Photo 2027 Open Call and the ideas, questions and perspectives behind them.

In Beyond the Gallop, photographer Philipp Treudt .treudt explores hobby horsing, a youth culture in which predominantly girls and young women turn stick horses into a form of sport, performance and collective expression.

Photographed in Germany and Finland, the project captures the energy of a community built around shared passion, creativity and belonging. But it also reveals a contradiction: while hobby horsing creates space for self-expression, its participants often face ridicule and hostility online.

Through photography, portraits, video and digital material, Philipp Treudt explores what it means to embrace something wholeheartedly - even when the outside world doesn't take it seriously.

What happens when a mask becomes more than a disguise - a connection to the past, the natural world and the spirits that shape a community?

With Open Call Spotlight, we're sharing a closer look at projects submitted to the Rotterdam Photo 2027 Open Call - and the ideas, questions and perspectives behind them.

In We the Spirits, photographer Jason Gardner explores the deeper meaning of traditional Carnival rituals. Over 15 years and across 15 countries, he has documented folkloric celebrations rooted in local identity, ancestral traditions and the changing seasons.

From animalistic costumes to elaborate masquerades, Jason Gardner looks beyond the spectacle to reveal how these rituals connect generations, challenge everyday norms and keep ancient beliefs alive in contemporary society.

Every photograph has a story behind it. With Open Call Spotlight, we're sharing a closer look at projects submitted to the Rotterdam Photo 2027 Open Call and the ideas, questions and perspectives behind them.

First up: Sarah Sullivan and her project Hairouna.

What does independence mean when the structures of colonialism are still part of everyday life?

Ongoing since 2024, Hairouna explores how young people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines navigate identity, history and their futures in a society shaped by colonialism and the legacy of slavery.

Combining photography, archival research, interviews and moving image, Sarah Sullivan connects the country’s past with the lived experiences of a new generation.

Through the Dutch Talent Project Grant, Rotterdam Photo and Amarte Fonds are supporting photographers based in the Netherlands to develop new work and bring it into the world.

Five selected artists will receive financial support and the opportunity to develop and present their projects during Rotterdam Photo 2027.

As our jury member Rebecca Simons puts it, “I encourage everyone with a strong project idea to apply.”

So, if there’s a project you’ve been thinking about, developing, or waiting for the right moment to begin, this could be that moment.

Bezuinigen op cultuur raakt ons allemaal.

Festivals zijn meer dan evenementen. Ze brengen Rotterdammers samen, geven ruimte aan nieuwe perspectieven en versterken de trots op onze stad.

Juist nu hebben we cultuur nodig die verbindt, inspireert en mensen samenbrengt.

Bezuinig niet op verbinding. Investeer in Rotterdam.

Daarom laten wij onze stem horen: haal de bezuiniging van tafel en zorg dat Rotterdam Photo en de andere de Rotterdamse festivals niet verdwijnen.

Five selected artists will receive €3,000, artistic guidance and a dedicated exhibition space at Rotterdam Photo 2027.

It’s a chance to develop your work, share it with a wider audience and become part of an international photography community.

[OPEN CALL] - The Rotterdam Photo 2027 Open Call is now OPEN 🎉

For our next edition, we’re exploring: VIBRANCE - The Pulse of a Living World.

We’re looking for images and projects that capture what moves, connects and creates energy - from the intimate to the collective, from physical presence to digital intensity.

There are three categories to choose from:

📸 PROJECTS - INTERNATIONAL
For photographic projects and series. Selected artists receive a dedicated exhibition space at Rotterdam Photo.

📸SINGLE IMAGE - INTERNATIONAL
For individual photographic works. Selected images become large-scale outdoor installations across the festival site.

You can apply to one or multiple categories, depending on your work.

Deadline: 4 October 2026.
